Andy Ross 25863549be kernel: Remove clock_always_on control from k_busy_wait()
This feature was a useless noop based on mistaken API understanding.

The idea seems to have been that k_busy_wait() included guards to
ensure "clock_always_on" was true duing the loop, presumably because
the original author was afraid that "turning the clock off" would
affect the operation of k_cycle_get_32().

Then later someone came around and "optimized" this for Quark SE,
where the cycle counter is the RTC and unrelated to the timer driver
used by the clock_always_on feature. (Except even there it presumably
should have been done at the SoC level and not just in the C1000
devboard -- note that Arduino 101 never would have gotten this).

But it was all a mistake: "clock_always_on" has nothing to do with
en/disabling the system cycle timer (which never happens when the
system is active, that's a feature of idle), it's a control over the
delivery of timer interrupts. And needless to say we don't care about
timer interrupts when we're spinning on a cycle counter.

Yank the whole mess.

Sebastian Bøe 8eb734cd82 DT: Rename from dts.fixup to dts_fixup.h
The Zephyr configuration system uses many different files in many
different formats. It makes it a lot easier for users to understand
what these files do if when we use the correct file extensions.

To this end we rename the dts.fixup files to the correct file
extension '.h'.

This is a breaking change for out-of-tree fixup files. Such files will
be detected and given an appropriate error message.

Marti Bolivar 59dc82e0d2 boards: adjust openocd runner arg syntax
The current method of setting the openocd runner arguments works for
direct invocation from the command line, but the values that are
written to the CMake cache are not properly separated and are
difficult to parse, due to the fact that in several cases, option
values contain spaces.

Adjust these runner arguments so that the options and their values are
separate list items. This makes it possible to parse them accurately
from the CMake cache.

Marti Bolivar 7a3462de7a scripts: runner: use arguments, not environment vars
The various runners (flash/debug scripts) use environment variables to
take arguments. This is legacy behavior which is not desirable.

Use command line arguments instead.

Note: this leaves more general environment variables with publicly
documented behavior in place for now, for compatibility, e.g.:

      ZEPHYR_FLASH_OVER_DFU, OPENSDA_FW, ESP_IDF_PATH, PYOCD_DAPARG

For example, when using dfu-util to flash arduino_101, instead of
setting DFUUTIL_PID, DFUUTIL_ALT, and DFUUTIL_IMG environment
variables, have the script invocation look like this:

  python3 .../zephyr_flash_debug.py dfu-util flash \
          [common arguments omitted] \
          --pid=8087:0aba --alt=x86_app \
          --img=.../build/zephyr/zephyr.bin

Make similar changes for other runners (openocd, etc.) and
targets (debug, debugserver).

To implement this in the scripts:

  - have the individual scripts/support/runner/some-runner.py files
register their own command line arguments

  - teach them to construct instances from arguments, not the
    environment

  - have zephyr_flash_debug.py request runners to register command
line argument parsers, and handle arguments

In the build system:

  - add a new board_runner_args() extension function that board.cmake
files can use to add to the zephyr_flash_debug.py command line

  - adjust cmake/flash/CMakeLists.txt to invoke with arguments

  - add new helper include files for each runner (like
    boards/common/dfu-util.board.cmake, etc.), which add default
options as needed and then add on overrides from
    board_runner_args() calls

  - update board.cmake files to use the new includes and extension

This implied some tweaking when using openocd to make the CMake string
escaping and unescaping work properly.

Marti Bolivar e33ec242fd scripts: refactor flash/debug scripts to remove "shell"
The Python-based runners have replaced the old shell scripts. Refactor
the build system accordingly:

- FLASH_SCRIPT is now BOARD_FLASH_RUNNER
- DEBUG_SCRIPT is now BOARD_DEBUG_RUNNER

The values, rather than being the names of files, are now the names of
runners in scripts/support/runner. They are still short, descriptive
names like "openocd", "jlink", "em-starterkit", etc.

Adjust the zephyr_flash_debug.py call and runner internals
accordingly. Have each runner class report a name and the commands it
can handle. This lets us move some boilerplate from each do_run()
method into the common run() routine, and enables further improvements
in future patches.

The handles_command() method is temporary, and will be replaced by a
more general mechanism for describing runner capabilities in a
subsequent patch. The initial use case for extending this is to add
device tree awareness to the runners.

To try to avoid user confusion, abort the configuration if an
xxx_SCRIPT is defined.

Sebastian Bøe 12f8f76165 Introduce cmake-based rewrite of KBuild
Introducing CMake is an important step in a larger effort to make
Zephyr easy to use for application developers working on different
platforms with different development environment needs.

Simplified, this change retains Kconfig as-is, and replaces all
Makefiles with CMakeLists.txt. The DSL-like Make language that KBuild
offers is replaced by a set of CMake extentions. These extentions have
either provided simple one-to-one translations of KBuild features or
introduced new concepts that replace KBuild concepts.

This is a breaking change for existing test infrastructure and build
scripts that are maintained out-of-tree. But for FW itself, no porting
should be necessary.

For users that just want to continue their work with minimal
disruption the following should suffice:

Install CMake 3.8.2+

Port any out-of-tree Makefiles to CMake.

Learn the absolute minimum about the new command line interface:

$ cd samples/hello_world
$ mkdir build && cd build
$ cmake -DBOARD=nrf52_pca10040 ..

$ cd build
$ make

Test configuration for QEMU Q35 VM, 1 GB RAM, 4 cores,

This will work provided qemu-system-x86_64 is installed in the system

The API name space for Bluetooth is bt_* and BT_* so it makes sense to

Ramesh Thomas 89ffd44dfb kernel: tickless: Add tickless kernel support
Adds event based scheduling logic to the kernel. Updates
management of timeouts, timers, idling etc. based on
time tracked at events rather than periodic ticks. Provides
interfaces for timers to announce and get next timer expiry
based on kernel scheduling decisions involving time slicing
of threads, timeouts and idling. Uses wall time units instead
of ticks in all scheduling activities.

The implementation involves changes in the following areas

1. Management of time in wall units like ms/us instead of ticks
The existing implementation already had an option to configure
number of ticks in a second. The new implementation builds on
top of that feature and provides option to set the size of the
scheduling granurality to mili seconds or micro seconds. This
allows most of the current implementation to be reused. Due to
this re-use and co-existence with tick based kernel, the names
of variables may contain the word "tick". However, in the
tickless kernel implementation, it represents the currently
configured time unit, which would be be mili seconds or
micro seconds. The APIs that take time as a parameter are not
impacted and they continue to pass time in mili seconds.

2. Timers would not be programmed in periodic mode
generating ticks. Instead they would be programmed in one
shot mode to generate events at the time the kernel scheduler
needs to gain control for its scheduling activities like
timers, timeouts, time slicing, idling etc.

3. The scheduler provides interfaces that the timer drivers
use to announce elapsed time and get the next time the scheduler
needs a timer event. It is possible that the scheduler may not
need another timer event, in which case the system would wait
for a non-timer event to wake it up if it is idling.

4. New APIs are defined to be implemented by timer drivers. Also
they need to handler timer events differently. These changes
have been done in the HPET timer driver. In future other timers
that support tickles kernel should implement these APIs as well.
These APIs are to re-program the timer, update and announce
elapsed time.

5. Philosopher and timer_api applications have been enabled to
test tickless kernel. Separate configuration files are created
which define the necessary CONFIG flags. Run these apps using
following command
make pristine && make BOARD=qemu_x86 CONF_FILE=prj_tickless.conf qemu

Replace the existing Apache 2.0 boilerplate header with an SPDX tag

Also updated doc/porting/application.rst that had a dependency on

Manually updated subsys/logging/sys_log.c that had a malformed
header in the original file. Also cleanup several cases that already
had a SPDX tag and we either got a duplicate or missed updating.

Anas Nashif 2bc9d69981 build: abstract emulation and replace qemu goal with run
This will replace the current goal of 'make qemu' with 'make run' and
moves Qemu handling into its own file and into the boards instead of
being architecture specific.

We should be able to add new boards that support some other type of
emulation (by adding scripts/Makefile.<emu type>) and allow the board to
define their own options for the use type of emulation.

'make qemu' will still work, however it will be deprecated, starting
with this commit it is recommended to use 'make run'.

PRIMARY, SECONDARY, NANOKERNEL, MICROKERNEL init levels are now
deprecated.

New init levels introduced: PRE_KERNEL_1, PRE_KERNEL_2, POST_KERNEL

Most existing code has instances of PRIMARY replaced with PRE_KERNEL_1,
SECONDARY with POST_KERNEL as SECONDARY has had a longstanding bug
where the documentation specified SECONDARY ran before the kernel started
up, but actually ran afterwards.

These options were only needed for a MyNewt-based nRF51 firmware on

to have them default to enabled. Instead, if they are needed, require

easier maintenance going forward as the number of boards grows. It
will be easier for any scripts to know the board/arch mapping without
having to maintain an explicit list of what boards are associated with
