The `WEST_PYTHON` reported by west (python) may use a different path
style (casing and separator) than the path style in CMake
find_package(Python3).
This may result in following additional error text when west version is
not meeting the minimum required version:
The Python version used by west is: c:\python37\python.exe
The Python version used by CMake is: C:/Python37/python.exe
This might be correct, but please verify your installation.
Using `get_filename_component` will return the path in same style as
CMake find_package(Python3).

This commit introduces the possibility of defining ROOTs in a Zephyr
module and have it automatically appended to list of other ROOTs.
Supported with this commit:
- BOARD_ROOT
- SOC_ROOT
- DTS_ROOT
- ARCH_ROOT
In order to support this in Zephyr module files, the detection of west
has been moved to dedicated west.cmake file and included immediately
after python.cmake.
Also the inclusion of zephyr_modules.cmake has moved before first use
of BOARD_ROOT.

This commit introduces support for multiple SOC_ROOT.
This means that additional SOC_ROOTs specified using -DSOC_ROOT as
argument to CMake will be forming a list together with ${ZEPHYR_BASE}.
This allows for greater flexibility, as developers can now specify
multiple out-of-tree SoCs and not worry about the SoC used for the
board they compile for.
Also it avoid code, such as:
if(BOARD STREQUAL my_board_using_out_of_tree_soc)
set(SOC_ROOT some/out/of/tree/soc/path)
endif()
in application CMakeLists.txt.
Finally, allowing multiple SOC_ROOTs prepares for specifying SOC_ROOTs
in Zephyr modules.

This commit relocates the generated Kconfig.modules file from
${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR} into ${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR}/Kconfig.
This is done as preparation of multiple SOC and ARCH root support.
A single Kconfig folder inside ${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR} helps to keep the
build folder tidy.

Currently, when usage.cmake is run, the shield list is in construction
order, making it difficult to locate the shield of interest. This sorts
the list upon display and also makes the display indent consistent.

This set of functions seem to be there just because of historical
reasons, stemming from Kbuild. They are non-obvious and prone to errors,
so remove them in favor of the `_ifdef()` ones with an explicit
`CONFIG_` condition.

Consolidate creation of edtlib.EDT objects from a build directory's
devicetree into one place by loading it from build/zephyr/edt.pickle
everywhere. A previous commit creates edt.pickle from gen_defines.py.
In addition to probably speeding things up slightly by not reparsing
the devicetree, the main benefit of this approach is creating a single
point of truth for the bindings directories and warnings
configuration, meaning we don't have to worry about them getting out
of sync while being passed around between devicetree creation and
usage time.

This is now a bit more portable across OS and toolchain.
One bouns is that this nows with on qemu_x86_64.
A few differences are:
() z_mrsh_* which are aliases to handler_no_syscalls() are now
dropped as they are mapped to the same address, so that they
are not counted multiple times.
() Static functions and variables with same names should now be
attributed to the correct source files instead of being
accumulated into the same symbol of one file (e.g. multiple
thread_entry() in kernel tests).
() The totals for ROM and RAM are calculated from the
corresponding sections. Previous script includes the debug
sections as total ROM size which is not entirely correct.

Commit 269f350487 introduced a new
mechanism for loading the edtlib.EDT representation of the devicetree
from kconfigfunctions.py.
While this works for running kconfig.py from kconfig.cmake using
execute_process(), it doesn't work when kconfigfunctions.py is loaded
by the menuconfig target or any other Kconfig targets that use
add_custom_target().
The reason why is that these targets' environments do not have the
location of the EDT pickle file available. This is unlike kconfig.py,
which executes using the same environment as cmake itself, where
edt.pickle's location is already available in the environment.
Fix that by adding EDT_PICKLE to the environment for menuconfig and
friends.

Commit ef3c5e5516 changed the way
WEST_TOPDIR is initialized from calling 'west topdir' as a subprocess
to using the west API.
However, WEST_TOPDIR is a cmake variable and must be a cmake-style
path, with forward slashes. While 'west topdir' as a command does
output a forward slash separated path (basically in order to make the
zephyr build system work), west_topdir() as an API returns the path in
the host environment path style, which on Windows uses backslashes.
This turns out to be the ultimate cause of the following build error:
CMake Error at C:/.../CheckCCompilerFlag.cmake:41 (set):
Syntax error in cmake code when parsing string
-fmacro-prefix-map=C:\Users\Marti\zp=WEST_TOPDIR
Fix it by converting to POSIX style in Python. We could have
potentially also done this using file(TO_CMAKE_PATH "${WEST_TOPDIR}"
...), but I'm intentionally repeating the old way of doing things
since it was known to work.

the data structures, and the holes caused due to aligning the data

When running CMake, then Python3 will be used.
This is detected through FindPython3, with a preference for using the
python or python3 in path, if any of those matches the required Python
minimal version in Zephyr.
It is also possible for users to specify a different Python, as example
by using:
`cmake -DPYTHON_PREFER=/usr/bin/python3.x`
However, when running `west` as native command, then west will be
invoked on linux based on the python defined in:
`west` launcher, which could be: `#!/usr/bin/python3.y`
Thus there could be mismatch in Pythons used for `west` and the python
used for other scripts.
This is even worse on windows, where a user might experience:

when testing out a newer Python, but the python in path is still a 3.7.
By importing `west` into zephyr_module.py and by using, as example
`python -c "from west.util import west_topdir; print(topdir())"`
we ensure the same python is used in all python scripts.
Also it allows the user to control the python to use for west.
It also ensures that the west version being tested, is also the version
being used, where old code would test the version imported by python,
but using the west in path (which could be a different version)
If the west version installed in the current Python, and west invocation
is using a different Python interpreter, then an additional help text
is printed, to easier assist users with debugging.

Now that kconfigfunctions.py is loading the EDT object from a pickle
file, I can't find any other reads of the environment variables it was
previously using to do that.
(The CMake variables with the same names are read in different places;
I'm specifically talking about environment variables here.)

We need to save and restore the devicetree data to generate optimized
dependency information later on in the build, in particular during the
final application link.
Make this happen by pickling the EDT object in BUILD_DIR/edt.pickle.
The existence of this file is an implementation detail, so do not add
it to the documentation.

This commit creates a list of a phony targets for each runner, that is:
`west_flash_depends`, `west_debug_depends`, and so on.
Those targets has identical dependencies as CMake runner target.
flash, debug, debugserver, attach targets.
As example `ninja flash` correctly ensures dependencies are taken into
consideration before calling `west flash`.
Unfortunately, calling `west flash` directly would not re-run the flash
dependencies, cause `west flash` would only build the default CMake
target.
Now, `west flash` calls the phony `west_flash_depends` target, ensuring
all deps are up-to-date before flashing (unless --skip-rebuild is given)
The same is true for the other mentioned runners.

This commit renames `FLASH_DEPS` to `RUNNERS_DEPS`.
The current name `FLASH_DEPS` is misleading in the sense that this
depency is added to all runner targets, flash, debug, debugserver,
attach, and not only the flash runners.
Therefore this is now named `RUNNERS_DEPS` instead.
Similar, zephyr_property_target now contains the property
FLASH_DEPENDENCIES, DEBUG_DEPENDENCIES, and so on, so that additional
dependencies can be added for each runner.

Using zephyr_target_property::FLASH_DEPENDENCIES to fetch additional
dependencies to the flash operation.
The properties are fetched using a generator expression which allows
users of Zephyr to add dependencies both before and after the flash
target has been defined.
Dependencies can be other targets that must be build / custom commands
which must be executed before the flash operation. Or it can be targets
which must be built.

In some cases DTC may be installed, but in a non-working state.
In such cases, CMake will abort processing with an cryptic error.
This commit now handles dtc version errors and print a warning., and
CMake processing continues.
dtc is an optional component and failures should not break CMake run.

This commit is a followup to PR #25808 which updates the tests to
ensure the REQUIRED keyword is also used for the ZephyrUnitest package.
This provides a better error message when building with CMake and
forgetting ZEPHYR_BASE or not registering Zephyr in the CMake package

When using an IDE (e.g. Eclipse, Qt Creator), the project name gets
displayed. This greatly simplifies the navigation between projects when
having many of them open at the same time. Naming multiple projects
"NONE" defeats this functionality.
This patch tries to use sensible project names while not duplicating
too much of what is already represented in the path. This is done by
using the name of the directory the relevant CMakeLists.txt file is
stored in. To ensure unique project names, small, manual adjustments
have been done.

The commit a8e90cbfb3 improved handling of
shields. Unfortunately it pops items from the SHIELD variable which
works well if SHIELD is a CMake ;-separated list, but if the list is
a space separated list, as may be provided by the user, then this
principle fails as reported in #25656.
This is fixed by keeping improved behaviour, while popping from an
alternative SHIELD-NOTFOUND list instead.

The ZephyrBuildConfiguration package allow downstream users to control
the Zephyr build system using a cmake package.
A Zephyr Build Configuration package allows for setting of additional
DTS_ROOT, BOARD_ROOT, and similar variables without having to patch
Zephyr repo, but it also allows for inclusion of additional boilerplate
code for more advanced use cases.
The repository or folder containing the Zephyr Build Configuration
package must be on toplevel in the Zephyr workspace.

This commit fixes an issue where FindPython3 could wrongly select the
Python version not in environment path.
If user installed both 32 and 64 bit versions of the same Python, for
example 3.7.x, the current search would only specify that 3.7 is needed.
In some cases, FindPython3 could select the 32 bit version, even if the
64 bit version is the one on %PATH%.
This is fixed, by setting Python3_ROOT_DIR to point to the tested Python
in %PATH%.

This commit introduces backward compatibility with Zephyr SDK 0.11.1
and 0.11.2 so that users having one of those versions installed can
continue to use that version.
This remove the need to force users to update their SDK.
This is kept in independent commit to ensure it can easily be reverted
when minimum required Zephyr SDK is bumped to version 0.12.

This commit introduces Zephyr SDK CMake config package.
This removes the need for setting ZEPHYR_SDK_INSTALL_DIR and
ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT when using Zephyr SDK in Linux.
It also allows to introduces never SDKs without breaking Zephyr.
For example, with this PR, the current Zephyr SDK is 0.11.1 but when
releasing 0.12 then the current Zephyr will no longer built.
This PR moves the Zephyr SDK CMake related code to the SDK and thus
allowing to use newer SDKs, as long as they are backwards compatible.
It also allows multiple SDK installations, and will automatically select
the version closet to the required version.

Added support for Qemu User Networking and tested with
qemu_x86 model. The support is kept simple assuming that
the TAP interface will always be preferred for more
sophisticated / practical use cases.
QEMU User Networking is implemented using "slirp", which
provides a full TCP/IP stack within QEMU and uses that
stack to implement a virtual NAT'd network. As this
support is built into QEMU, it can be used with any model
and requires no admin privileges on the host machine,
unlike TAP.
Added documentation to facilitate the user.

The QEMU '-semihosting' option enables the emulation of the semihosting
mechanism that can be used to interface the Zephyr RTOS to the host
operating system.
In order to support semihosting console output, the QEMU semihosting
feature is enabled and its console is connected to the console backend
chardev.

1. Fix the regular expression used to parse version numbers. This uses
\. and . to parse literal dots; the second one matches any character.
Just use [.] instead in both cases.
2. Don't error out if the installed dtc is too old. It's optional, so
we should just proceed without it. Print a warning instead, and make
it so dts.cmake won't do anything with the installed dtc.

This commit renames the Kconfig `FLOAT` symbol to `FPU`, since this
symbol only indicates that the hardware Floating Point Unit (FPU) is
used and does not imply and/or indicate the general availability of
toolchain-level floating point support (i.e. this symbol is not
selected when building for an FPU-less platform that supports floating
point operations through the toolchain-provided software floating point
library).
Moreover, given that the symbol that indicates the availability of FPU
is named `CPU_HAS_FPU`, it only makes sense to use "FPU" in the name of
the symbol that enables the FPU.

The ARM GCC `-march` compiler flag is completely redundant when the
`-mcpu` flag is specified, since the `-mcpu` selects the target ARM
architecture as well as CPU-specific optimisations.
In fact, it is disadvantageous to specify both `-march` and `-mcpu`
flags because the `-march` flag overrides and disables any CPU-specific
optimisations enabled by the `-mcpu` flag.

This commit adds the GCC `-mabi=lp64` flag to force the LP64 (64-bit
long and pointer) ABI, which is mandatory for running the Zephyr
AArch64 architecture port.
Note that this flag is, strictly speaking, not necessary in most cases
because the AArch64 GCC defaults to using the LP64 ABI. This flag is
required, however, if compiling Zephyr with a GCC that is configured
with `--with-abi=ilp32`, which makes ILP32 the default ABI.

Using find_package(Python3 3.6) will select the highest available
python3.
This means that in case user has:
/usr/bin/python --> python2.7
/usr/bin/python3 --> python3.6
/usr/bin/python3.6
/usr/bin/python3.8
then CMake will choose python 3.8.
This commit changes that behavior, so that in the above scenario, then
Python 3.6 will be preferred.
It also adds the following, python will be preferred over python3, if
both meets the minimum requirement.
For example:
/usr/bin/python --> python3.6
/usr/bin/python3 --> python3.7
then Python 3.6 is prefered.
It further introduces PYTHON_PREFER variable, which can be used to
further control the behavior.
As example -DPYTHON_PREFER=python3.7 will choose Python 3.7 if
installed.

The ARM architecture root directory contains `aarch32.cmake` and
`aarch64.cmake` files whose contents are better suited to go into other
more purpose-specific files.
This commit removes the aforementioned files and moves their contents
to other files following the convention used by other architectures.

This commit switches to use the find_package(Python3) introduced with
CMake 3.12.
This removes the need for a Zephyr backport of Python detection module.
The search order for Python3 is following CMake search order and can be
controlled through CMake flags (See CMake documentation).
Default it will use the Python version found in PATH.
If multiple Python3 versions are found in PATH, the newest version will
be selected (Can be controlled using `Python3_FIND_STRATEGY`)
Using find_package(Python3) also ensures Python2.7 will never be
selected, issue #11103, which was re-introduced in Zephyr.

Zephyr board names must be globally unique which requires that they
encode all necessary information to identify a specific target.
Typing in these names can be inconvenient to developers working on
multiple targets within a single workspace.
Extend the cmake infrastructure to read an optional board aliases file
that will map custom aliases to the corresponding canonical Zephyr
board name.

The mabi and march options of the compiler and linker commands
were previously hardcoded and depended only on the 64BIT config
option. This update allows these flags to be set by the config
options currently available, plus an additional option to
specify the compressed ISA.

The board name for the nRF52 DK, so far known as nrf52_pca10040, is
renamed to nrf52dk_nrf52832. Its documentation and all references
to its name in the tree are updated accordingly. Overlay and
configuration files specific to this board are also renamed, to
match the new board name.

This commit allows the `QEMU_KERNEL_OPTION` variable, which can be
overridden by the `board.cmake`, to contain references to the variables
that are not available at the time of `board.cmake` inclusion, by
expanding its escpaed variable references in `cmake/emu/qemu.cmake`
which is included nearby the end of the root `CMakeLists.txt`.
With this change, the `board.cmake` can escape variable references as
follows and allow them to be expanded later:
set(QEMU_KERNEL_OPTION "-device;loader,file=\$<TARGET_FILE:$\{...}>")

This commit includes the following fixes in order to remove environment
setting of ZEPHYR_BASE is west extension commands.
- Build command
west build --pristine will now use the ZEPHYR_BASE variable found
in CMakeCache.txt in the build folder.
This ensures that the pristine command is executed from the same
Zephyr that was used for compilation.
- Board command
The west boards command no longer sets Zephyr base before invoking
cmake -P cmake/boards.cmake
Instead boards.cmake uses find_package(Zephyr) to ensure consistent
behavior with Zephyr samples, so that the detection of Zephyr base is
uniform across CMake commands.
It also changes BOARD_ROOT_SPACE_SEPARATED to BOARD_ROOT in order to
be consistent with existing user documentation.

West utilizes Zephyr base when invoked out-of-tree in order to determine
west topdir.
This commit ensures that zephyr base when invoking west from CMake is
set to current zephyr base.

With the introduction of ZephyrConfig.cmake all parts of CMake code
should rely on the CMake ZEPHYR_BASE variable instead of the environment
setting.
This ensures that after the first CMake invocation, then all subsequent
invocation in same build folder will use same zephyr base.

Fixed usage build target.
Previously, `ninja usage` would print:
Build flags:
ninja VERBOSE=1 [targets] verbose build
This is clearly wrong, as VERBOSE=1 is for make targets.
To support both ninja based builds and make based build systems, the
CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM is now exported from the calling CMake / build
instance, and the verbose flag is set depending on whether ninja or
make is used as build program.

When ZephyrConfig package is being version checked, then
ZephyrConfigVersion.cmake loads version.cmake.
This causes a print message, such as the following to happen:
-- Zephyr version: 2.2.0
Now, in case a user has multiple Zephyr installations, this could
result in something similar to:
-- Zephyr version: 2.2.0
-- Zephyr version: 2.x.0
-- Zephyr version: 3.x.0
being printed.
This commit add the possibility to disable version printing.
With new Zephyr base find_package, printing of ZEPHYR_BASE is added
after the version, in order to make it easy for users to see which
Zephyr is used.

The nRF52840 DK board target, so far known as nrf52840_pca10056,
is renamed to nrf52840dk_nrf52840.
Its documentation and all references to its name in the tree are
updated accordingly. Overlay and configuration files specific to
this board are also renamed, to match the new board name.

Fix bug where SHIELDS would be marked as "not found" in the
NOT_FOUND_SHIELD_LIST when they were present, just not in the first
BOARD root in the BOARD_ROOT list.
Instead of marking shields in the NOT_FOUND_SHIELD_LIST, we (continue)
popping shields from SHIELD and check if there are any shields left in
SHIELD.

This supports a new devicetree macro syntax coming. It's not really
worth mixing up the old and the new generation scripts into one file,
because:
- we aim to remove support for the old macros at some point, so it
will be cleaner to start fresh with a new script based on the old one
that only generates the new syntax
- it will avoid regressions to leave the existing code alone while
we're moving users to the new names
Keep the existing script by moving it to gen_legacy_defines.py and
changing a few comments and strings around. It's responsible for
generating:
- devicetree.conf: only needed by deprecated kconfigfunctions
- devicetree_legacy_unfixed.h: "old" devicetree_unfixed.h macros
Put a new gen_defines.py in its place. It generates:
- zephyr.dts
- devicetree_unfixed.h in the new syntax
Include devicetree_legacy_unfixed.h from devicetree.h so no DT users
are affected by this change.

This rename is mostly to easy git managment and review so any changes or
the addition of the new gen_defines.py doesn't look like a diff against
the old code if you look at just that commit.
We keep changes to a minimum to just keep things building with the
renamed gen_legacy_defines.py.

This commit introduces boards/deprecated.cmake to allow deprecation
of existing boards, when a board is renamed.
This allows users to still specify the old board name, and let Zephyr
build system to select the new board name.

to nrf51dk_nrf51422. We update all associated references
in the supportive documentation and all nRF51-related

Using zephyr_target_property::FLASH_DEPENDENCIES to fetch additional
dependencies to the flash operation.
The properties are fetched using a generator expression which allows
users of Zephyr to add dependencies both before and after the flash
target has been defined.
Dependencies can be other targets that must be build / custom commands
which must be executed before the flash operation. Or it can be targets
which must be built.

Actual files make terrible dependency targets in CMake.
Wrap the generation of subsystems.json into a custom
target to get around this. Fixes a problem where
parse_syscalls.py was being called multiple times.

This change extends the parse_syscalls.py script to scan for a
__subsystem sentinal added to driver api declarations. It thens
generates a list that is passed into gen_kobject_list.py to extend
the subsystems list. This allows subsystems to be declared in the
code instead of a separate python list and provides a mechanism for
defining out-of-tree subsystems.

This commit introduces the `COMPILER_ISA_THUMB2` symbol to allow
choosing either the ARM or Thumb instruction set for C code
compilation.
In addition, this commit introduces the `ASSEMBLER_ISA_THUMB2` helper
symbol to specify the default target instruction set for the assembler.

Print the name of the discovered toolchain as well as the variable
used to initialize it.
This is nice to know when doing remote support, since users will
sometimes misconfigure their toolchain and not know what that means.

The header printed at the beginning of every west build is kind of
annoying. Let's remove it and just print the application source
directory at cmake time instead. The build directory and board are
already printed there, anyway, and that's all IDE users will see.
Let's clean up the BOARD to make it say "board" instead. That matches
the west build --board option name a bit more closely and is still
legible.
Likewise, let's not print any west build messages if we're just
incrementally recompiling. That's noisy.

There are two problems with the way runners.yaml is being created:
1. The dictionary which contains the arguments for each runner is
using the runner's name converted to a C identifier instead of the
runner's name itself. That causes west flash to fail when the two
are different, e.g. for 'misc-flasher' (runner name), which is
different than 'misc_flasher' (runner name as C identifier)
2. We need to make sure that the dictionary key maps to an empty list
if there are no arguments, which normally doesn't happen since the
runner usually at least takes the path of the file to flash or debug.
It does happen in the case of misc-flasher, though, since the whole
point of that runner is that it's an escape hatch for people with
out of tree scripts that nevertheless want 'west flash' integration
for things like sanitycheck device testing.
3. A copy/paste error is setting the debug runner to the flash runner.
Fix them all.

The YAML contents mirror the values in the ZEPHYR_RUNNER_CONFIG
variables, but they are phrased in terms of command line arguments.
This makes it possible for Python to intermix them with
runner-specific arguments, which is a step towards being able to set
arguments like --bin-file via board_set_runner_args(). The next step
is to handle them in Python too.
Move the RUNNERS_VERBOSE setting closer to its use while at it, to
preserve readability.

Right now when building a release candidate in master cmake reports the
version wrongly as the final version, for example:
-- Zephyr version: 2.2.0
This is misleading and confusing. Cmake does not like the rcX suffix and
internally we indeed use 2.2.0 as the version.
This patch just changes the output of the status message and adds the
extra version field:
-- Zephyr version: 2.2.0-rc1
and continues to use the cmake compatible version internally.

It used to be that zephyr-sdk's were always contained all toolchains,
but as of recently it is also possible to download partial toolchains.
This patch fixes an issue where it was assumed that the zephyr sdk
contained an x86 toolchain. Now we glob for all known toolchains.
Note that the toolchain discovered by generic.cmake can be any generic
toolchain and does not need to be the same that is discovered by
target.cmake.

West version 0.7.0 introduced `west topdir` command.
Unfortunately version 0.7.0 would print the path in windows path style
when executed in Windows.
This commit ensure that `west topdir` is only used if west >= 0.7.1.

gperf is only used when CONFIG_USERSPACE is enabled. Users that use
arch's that don't support CONFIG_USERSPACE, or happen to not never
enable CONFIG_USERSPACE should not be artificially required to install
gperf.
This change makes gperf optional by moving it's presence-check to it's
usage.

Add a '--dts-out <file>' flag to gen_defines.py that saves the final
devicetree to <file>, in DTS format, using the new EDT.dts_source
attribute.
Handy to have available as a debugging aid. Unused otherwise.
Also write a dummy <BOARD>.dts_compiled file that tells people to look
at zephyr.dts, for people that might be used to that file. It was
removed in commit 8d8b06978c ("dts: Remove generation of
<BOARD>.dts_compiled").

Introduce HAS_NEWLIB_LIBC_NANO Kconfig option that the toolchain
specific Kconfig (gnuarmemb & zephyr 0.11) can select to convey that the
feature is supported.
This removes the need to if protect the NEWLIB_LIBC_NANO Kconfig with:

Allow a given toolchain to specify Kconfig options that might be
relevant to a feature available in that toolchain.
For example, the ARM embedded GNU toolchain supports two variants of
newlib and you select the smaller one via a spec file. We can use a
Kconfig option like HAS_NEWLIB_LIBC_NANO to convey that this feature is
supported by that toolchain.
We look for the toolchain Kconfig in ${TOOLCHAIN_KCONFIG_DIR}/Kconfig,
and default TOOLCHAIN_KCONFIG_DIR to:
${TOOLCHAIN_ROOT}/cmake/toolchain/${ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT})
toolchain specific cmake files can override the default if needed.
Additionally tweaked the zephyr/generic.cmake to use
${CMAKE_CURRENT_LIST_DIR} to reduce some duplication.

dtc is only used for static analysis (producing warnings) of the
DeviceTree sources. This means that valid Zephyr firmware can sanely
be built without it.
For some users, for instance Windows users that are not permitted to
use Chocolatey, installing dtc is problematic and installing it is not
worth the DT warnings that it provides.
To make using Zephyr easier for these users we make using DTC
recommended and opt-out, instead of mandatory.

Add an opt-in feature that will generate a Makefile with build
variables like CC, and KBUILD_CFLAGS for consumption by third-party
Make-based build systems.
This emulates the 'outputexports' target that KBuild supported and is
supported for the same reasons that KBuild supported it. Easier
integration with third-party build systems.

In zephyr_linker_sources().
This is done since the point of the location is to place things at given
offsets. This can only be done consistenly if the linker code is placed
into the _first_ section.
All uses of TEXT_START are replaced with ROM_START.
ROM_START is only supported in some arches, as some arches have several
custom sections before text. These don't currently have ROM_START or
TEXT_START available, but that could be added with a bit of refactoring
in their linker script.
No SORT_KEYs are changed.
This also fixes an error introduced when TEXT_START was added, where
TEXT_SECTION_OFFSET was applied to riscv's common linker.ld instead of
to openisa_rv32m1's specific linker.ld.

There are some issues with the behavior when rerunning CMake in an
already initialized build directory:
1. The check for assignments to promptless symbols in configuration
fragments isn't run when reconfiguring, because it only runs if
zephyr/.config doesn't exist
2. As outlined in
https://github.com/zephyrproject-rtos/zephyr/issues/9573, you can
get into situations where zephyr/.config is invalid (e.g. due to
being outdated), but menuconfig/guiconfig can't be run to fix it
3. If kconfig.py fails while merging fragments during reconfiguration,
it will ignore the fragments during the next reconfiguration and use
the existing zephyr/.config instead, because the fragment checksum
is calculated and saved before running kconfig.py
(Footnote: The input configuration file(s) to kconfig.py can be either a
list of configuration fragments, when merging fragments, or just
zephyr/.config, if the merged configuration is up-to-date. The output
configuration file is always zephyr/.config.)
To fix the first two issues, explicitly tell kconfig.py when it's
dealing with handwritten configuration input (fragments), via a new
--handwritten-input-configs flag. This is more robust than checking
whether zephyr/.config exists, which was the old logic.
When dealing with handwritten input, there should be no assignments to
promptless symbols. Assignments to promptless symbols is expected in
zephyr/.config however, because it doubles as configuration output.
When running menuconfig/guiconfig, the input configuration is
zephyr/.config rather than configuration fragments, so this change also
makes sure that menuconfig can always be run as long as zephyr/.config
exists and is up-to-date.
To fix the last issue, only write the checksum for the configuration
fragments if kconfig.py succeeds (which means it wrote a
zephyr/.config).
Also improve naming a bit, add help texts for the command-line
parameters to kconfig.py, and simplify write_kconfig_filenames() by
moving logic into it.
Partial fix for
https://github.com/zephyrproject-rtos/zephyr/issues/9573, without the
part in #issuecomment-469701831. Can still run into issues when e.g.
when CMake files can't make sense of settings.

generated_dts_board.h is pretty redundant and confusing as a name. Call
it devicetree.h instead.
dts.h would be another option, but DTS stands for "devicetree source"
and is the source code format, so it's a bit confusing too.
The replacement was done by grepping for 'generated_dts_board' and
'GENERATED_DTS_BOARD'.
Two build diagram and input-output SVG files were updated as well, along
with misc. documentation.
hal_ti, mcuboot, and ci-tools updates are included too, in the west.yml
update.

Unused after the old devicescript were removed in commit c8c35f76ab
("scripts: dts: Remove deprecated extract_dts_includes.py script"). The
old scripts relied on parsing the output of 'dts -Odts', which replaces
e.g. phandle references. The new scripts parse the DTS files directly.
Keep running the dtc compiler just to catch any warnings/errors from it.
The edit to doc/guides/build/build-config-phase.svg is to remove the box
with '*.dts_compiled' in it (and the arrows to/from it). https://draw.io
can be used to edit it.

This commit splits the 'locore' and 'main' memory regions into
separate executable images and specifies the 'locore' as the boot
kernel, in order to prevent the QEMU direct multiboot kernel loader
from overwriting the BIOS and option ROM areas located in between
the two memory regions.
The Zephyr x86-64 kernel image consists of two discontiguous load
memory regions: 'locore' at 0x8000 and 'main' at 0x100000, but the
QEMU treats these as single contiguous memory region starting at
0x8000 and ending at (0x100000 + MAIN_IMAGE_SIZE - 1).
This results in the direct multiboot kernel loader overwriting the
BIOS and option ROM areas as part of the kernel loading process, and
causes any writable system regions to be corrupted (e.g. KVMVAPIC ROM).
By splitting the two discontiguous memory regions into separate images
and specifying only the boot image (i.e. 'locore') as the '-kernel',
it is possible to work around the QEMU direct kernel loading design
limitation.
This workaround is required to support the QEMU v4.2.0 and above.

The XCC toolchain may come with Clang front-end depending on
how it's built. Currently, the only SoC/board using XCC is
the intel_s1000_crb and its XCC toolchain comes with Clang
3.9.0 which has a lot better support for C99 and C++11 than
the portion based on GCC 4.2 (which does not even support
C++11). So this change attempts to use the Clang portion
instead of GCC if the Clang executable exists.

The undefined symbol option "-u" applies to linker so prefix
it with the linker prefix (usually "-Wl"). This fixes warnings
from LLVM/Clang about unknown arguments.

The current QEMU console configuration directly connects the console
serial port to the backend using '-serial' option.
This is less than ideal because only single console instance can be
connected to a backend and aggregation of multiple console outputs is
not possible (e.g. multiple console serial ports and semihosting
console to single console backend).
In order to solve this problem, single multiplexed chardev console
backend is declared and all consoles are connected to it.

For application portability, it is required that feature activation
is made conditional in shield configuration. This way features remain
controlled on application side.
To enable this we need that list of user activated shield is made
available to Kconfig.

Xtensa requires building a new toolchain for a specific SoC.
By default xtools built Xtensa toolchains all have prefix of
xtensa-zephyr-elf. In order to distinguish different toolchains,
they are now placed in their own directories under their SoC
name. This allows us to have multiple Xtensa toolchains
targeting multiple SoCs.
The additional level in path name is introduced in SDK v0.11
and sdk-ng master.

-Wold-style-definition is not a supported option for C++ builds. To
prevent it being passed:
* the list of compiler flags to be excluded from C++ builds is moved
to be toolchain-specific;
* -Wold-style-definition is added to that list for gcc and clang;
* -Wold-style-definition is moved from zephyr_compiler_options to
zephyr_cc_option so the option checking code is executed for it.

Zephyr currently requires Python 3.4 or later. The core Python team
declared version 3.4 hit End of Life (EOL) in March, so there's no
reason to continue to support it if that's causing a burden, which it
is.
This commit allows Zephyr's Python scripts to depend on features
present in version 3.6 or later.
This does skip support for a currently active version of Python:
- Python 3.5 is actively supported by the core Python devs until 09/2020
- Zephyr's 2.2 release, the first which could include this change, is
tentatively scheduled for 02/2020.
However, almost all supported platforms are either unaffected, or
their users can upgrade easily:
- Windows users who need to can upgrade Python with:
choco upgrade python
- macOS users who need to can upgrade Python with:
brew upgrade python3
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux users who need to upgrade can use
Software Collections (SCLs), e.g. as described here:
https://developers.redhat.com/blog/2018/08/13/install-python3-rhel/
- CentOS Linux users also have access to SCLs, as described here:
https://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/SCL
- Ubuntu's current long-term support (LTS) release (Bionic Beaver,
version 18.04) ships with Python 3.6. It and all later versions of
Ubuntu won't be affected by this change.
- Debian's current stable release (Buster, version 10) ships Python 3.7
and likewise won't be affected.
The impact of this change is therefore biggest for older versions of
Linux. In particular, these are impacted:
- Older Ubuntu LTS releases.
- Ubuntu 16.04 ships Python 3.5; it is still supported by Canonical.
- Ubuntu 14.04 ships Python 3.4, which is EOL. This Ubuntu version

Python 3.6 has compelling new features which make writing Zephyr's
scripts easier, and which it would be good to be able to rely upon.
This motivates moving from Python 3.4 to 3.6 instead of 3.5.
My personal killer 3.6 features motivating skipping 3.5 (YMMV):
- Windows console and file system encodings are UTF-8 (PEPs 528 and
529): Zephyr's scripts, and many utilities related to git, broadly
assume strings are UTF-8, so this is very helpful
- os.PathLike and the file system path protocol (PEP 519) allow
intermixing "smart" paths in pathlib with existing os.path based
code
- f-strings (PEP 0498) are a wonderful and efficient string
interpolation mechanism
- CPython dictionaries are insertion ordered as an implementation
detail starting with 3.6, which in practice helps with
reproducibility (and *all* Python implementations have insertion
ordered dicts starting with 3.7)

To detect where the cache directory has been located we have been
checking if $HOME is writable, and if it is assuming that $HOME/.cache
must be writable as well.
This is broken in environments where $HOME is owned by users and
$HOME/.cache is owned by admin. To fix this we check $HOME/.cache for
write-ability instead.

The EXTRA_CPPFLAGS is applied via zephyr_compile_definitions()
instead of zephyr_compile_options(), which makes all specified
options as macros. So fix it.

We do compiler flag compatibility tests to be able to support many
different toolchains and flags in a scalable way. But the test is not
perfect and in these situations we we will need to hardcode whether a
flag is compatible or not.
To support this we have zephyr_compiler_check first check if the flag
is covered by a hardcoded test before testing it.
Currently the only hardcoded compatibilty is that -Werror=implicit-int
is not supported for CXX.

Change the DTS preprocessor working directory from the binary
directory to the application directory.
This is done so that the user can specify
-DDTC_OVERLAY_FILE=overlay.dts with a relative path from the
application directory as is possible for CONF_FILE, and as is
reasonably expected to be possible by users.

The -Og (optimise for debugging) flag is only available for GCC 4.8.0
and above, and specifying it for a GCC version lower than 4.8.0 will
result in a compilation error.
This commit adds a check for compiler -Og optimisation flag support and
a fallback to -O0 (disable optimisation) when -Og flag is unsupported.

When generating the dependency file for DTS (${BOARD}.dts.pre.d),
some toolchains would use the source file for the file name stem.
So, the resulting dependency file is empty_file.d instead of one
with the board name. Fix this by passing -MF to explicitly tell
the compiler the name of the dependency file.

Renode 1.8 introduced a behaviour change in which it automatically
launches the telnet monitor on the TCP port 1234 by default.
In order to prevent sanitycheck failures from multiple renode instances
attempting to listen on the TCP port 1234 simultaneously, this commit
disables renode telnet monitor by specifying '--port -2' (a negative
number lower than -1 is required to disable telnet monitor because of
the way renode command line parser is implemented).

This adds support for Zephyr SDK 0.11.* is based on the 0.10 support
with the following changes:
Handle how xtensa toolchains for given targets are organized in SDK
0.11.x. They have their own directories per specific xtensa SoC.
The x86_64 toolchain in the SDK has been updated to build for 32-bit
targets (as it has 32-bit soft float libraries). Use this toolchain for
all x86 builds.

The toolchain_ld_cpp macro currently uses zephyr_ld_options function
to link libstdc++, instead of zephyr_link_libraries which is actually
intended for this purpose.
This commit replaces the usage of zephyr_ld_options with
zephyr_link_libraries as the former may erroneously filter out
-lstdc++ and the latter ensures that this linker flag is
unconditionally forwarded to the linker.

This commit refactors kernel and arch headers to establish a boundary
between private and public interface headers.
The refactoring strategy used in this commit is detailed in the issue
This commit introduces the following major changes:
1. Establish a clear boundary between private and public headers by
removing "kernel/include" and "arch/*/include" from the global
include paths. Ideally, only kernel/ and arch/*/ source files should
reference the headers in these directories. If these headers must be
used by a component, these include paths shall be manually added to
the CMakeLists.txt file of the component. This is intended to
discourage applications from including private kernel and arch
headers either knowingly and unknowingly.
- kernel/include/ (PRIVATE)
This directory contains the private headers that provide private
kernel definitions which should not be visible outside the kernel
and arch source code. All public kernel definitions must be added
to an appropriate header located under include/.
- arch/*/include/ (PRIVATE)
This directory contains the private headers that provide private
architecture-specific definitions which should not be visible
outside the arch and kernel source code. All public architecture-
specific definitions must be added to an appropriate header located
under include/arch/*/.
- include/ AND include/sys/ (PUBLIC)
This directory contains the public headers that provide public
kernel definitions which can be referenced by both kernel and
application code.
- include/arch/*/ (PUBLIC)
This directory contains the public headers that provide public
architecture-specific definitions which can be referenced by both
kernel and application code.
2. Split arch_interface.h into "kernel-to-arch interface" and "public
arch interface" divisions.
- kernel/include/kernel_arch_interface.h
* provides private "kernel-to-arch interface" definition.
* includes arch/*/include/kernel_arch_func.h to ensure that the
interface function implementations are always available.
* includes sys/arch_interface.h so that public arch interface
definitions are automatically included when including this file.

* only the functions that will be used in kernel and arch source
files are defined here.
- include/sys/arch_interface.h

architecture-specific public inline interface function

3. Refactor kernel and the existing architecture implementations.
- Remove circular dependency of kernel and arch headers. The
following general rules should be observed:
* Never include any private headers from public headers
* Never include kernel_internal.h in kernel_arch_data.h
* Always include kernel_arch_data.h from kernel_arch_func.h
* Never include kernel.h from kernel_struct.h either directly or
indirectly. Only add the kernel structures that must be referenced
from public arch headers in this file.
- Relocate syscall_handler.h to include/ so it can be used in the
public code. This is necessary because many user-mode public codes
reference the functions defined in this header.
- Relocate kernel_arch_thread.h to include/arch/*/thread.h. This is
necessary to provide architecture-specific thread definition for
'struct k_thread' in kernel.h.
- Remove any private header dependencies from public headers using
the following methods:
* If dependency is not required, simply omit
* If dependency is required,
- Relocate a portion of the required dependencies from the
private header to an appropriate public header OR
- Relocate the required private header to make it public.
This commit supersedes #20047, addresses #19666, and fixes#3056.

Commit 28a5657f1f and f67dcdbdf8 stopped ZEPHYR_BASE and
CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR from leaking into __FILE__ and other macros.
WEST_TOPDIR was still missing. Add it now that the new 'west topdir'
command has been implemented in

If the west version is too old then do nothing; same as before.
Any ASSERT in a zephyr module outside ZEPHYR_BASE is enough to test

If duplicates gets passed to scripts/dts/gen_defines.py, the bindings in
those directories will be loaded twice and actually get in conflict with
itself.

Speed up CMake by 100ms by importing west instead of invoking it as an
executable.
There is significant overhead in invoking west as a script via
pip. The exact reason why is not clear.
Also, simplify the version output parsing as we get the version in a
more machine-readable form now.

This commit allows a more dynamic approach for specifying that a zephyr
library must be placed in a dedicated app memomory partition.
This is still done by defining the partition in code using
K_APPMEM_PARTITION_DEFINE, but now the zephyr library can be added to
the generation of partition table using zephyr_library_app_memory
instead of modifying the overall zephyr/CMakeLists.txt file.

Of the 1.7s or so that CMake spends in Configure-time there is 0.1s
spent to determine whether west can flash or not. This is significant
compared to the usefulness of flash-check.
AFAICT when installing west there is no longer a two-step procedure
where first a bootstrapper that can't flash is installed, and then a
proper west is installed, so the risk of having installed the
bootstrapper is no longer something we should spend 100ms testing for.
This patch removes the check, thereby speeding up CMake by 100ms.

Fixed a bug where python 3.8 was not detected on Windows.
Python 3.8 was released two weeks ago and any Windows user that
installs it will detect the wrong version.
Also add detection for 3.9 for future-proofing.

Move _LINKER and _ASMLANGUAGE to target.cmake because of how we pick the
linker script that might be used. This way regardless of how or where a
linker.ld gets included we will always set _LINKER & _ASMLANGUAGE (so
any header that needs check based on those defines they can,
specifically generated_dts_board.h)

Since x86_64-zephyr-elf is a multi-lib toolchain, m32/m64
need to be specified for the compiler to return the correct
library path when queried (e.g. --print-libgcc-file-name).
This affects the compile check done by CMake. Without these
flags, the compiler returns incorrect toolchain path (e.g.
requiring 64-bit libraries but returning 32-bit library path).
This also affects compiler flag checks for "-lstdc++". Incorrect
library path results in error when checking for "-lstdc++", and
this flag will not be used for the build. This results in
undefined references when compiling C++ code.
This creates target_x86.cmake to add the necessary flags for
CMake to use. The target_x86_64.cmake is also created to
mirror the same change.
Also removing the -m32 flags for host-gcc since we are not
building x86 targets with the host-gcc compiler.

There are two set of code supporting x86_64: x86_64 using x32 ABI,
and x86 long mode, and this consolidates both into one x86_64
architecture and SoC supporting truly 64-bit mode.
() Removes the x86_64:x32 architecture and SoC, and replaces
them with the existing x86 long mode arch and SoC.
() Replace qemu_x86_64 with qemu_x86_long as qemu_x86_64.
() Updates samples and tests to remove reference to
qemu_x86_long.
() Renames CONFIG_X86_LONGMODE to CONFIG_X86_64.

Remove the common.dts file which has been used for a year.
common.dts at one point allowed us to conditionally add an MCUBoot
overlay based on Kconfig.
but since DT lost access to Kconfig options it has been unused.
The overridable variable DTS_COMMON_OVERLAYS, which by default points
to common.dts, is also unused in-tree, and any out-of-tree usage can
be ported over to use DTC_OVERLAY_FILE instead, so we remove the
variable as well.
This simplifies the configuration system.

When DT sources change CMake must be run again. CMake is currently
detecting changes to DT source files that we manually specify, but not
sources that are included through use of the preprocessor.
This patch makes the preprocessor output the includes used and adds
them to the 'CMAKE_CONFIGURE_DEPENDS' property.
This fixes#16791.

This commit introduces the cmake extension zephyr_library_amend.
This function allows for adding files in an out-of-tree Zephyr module
to a zephyr library created in zephyr repo CMake files.
As example:
drivers/entropy/CMakeLists.txt creates an zephyr library as:
zephyr_library()
only available to zephyr itself.
The amend function allows to amend to such a lib, by creating a
CMakeLists.txt file following identical folder structure in a Zephyr
Module:
<zephyr_module_oot>/drivers/entropy/CMakeLists.txt
zephyr_library_amend()
zephyr_library_sources() # Sources are amended to the original library

Instead, use the QEMU_KERNEL_FILE facility to perform the
change in a new file zephyr-qemu.elf. This is what will
be sent to the emulator.
Fixes an issue where opening zephyr.elf in GDB would treat
it as a 32-bit binary instead of what it actually is,
forcing the user to override the arch setting.

This was a very early test and got bitrotten inside a esp32-only
whitelist. Make it run generically.
SMP must be forced off by the test (it's commonly a platform default).
Add a build-time failure when the configuration is single-CPU, for
clarity.
Filter the test likewise so it runs on all supported systems.
Also, the key argument to the CPU startup function is vestigial and
the test was being too strict by requiring it to be non-zero.
Finally, the qemu command line needs to predicate the "-smp" argument
on CONFIG_MP_NUM_CPUS and not just CONFIG_SMP so we have an extra CPU
to test against.

Fix a bug where DTS_BINDINGS_DIRS could only have one entry. When
there were more than one entry the command for invoking menuconfig
became corrupted.
This changes the separator of DTS_BINDINGS_DIR from a space to ? so
that the shell does not interpret the space as an argument separator.

The CMake documentation for 'project' states "Call the project()
command near the top of the top-level CMakeLists.txt". Meaning, it
should be run as early as possible.
An obscure internal error was observed when 'project' was located in
zephyr/CMakeLists.txt and was observed to be fixed after moving
'project' earlier, hence this patch that moves it earlier.
Invoking project depends on knowing information about the toolchain so
it is placed after target_toolchain.cmake.

This PR adds the possibility to specify ZEPHYR_EXTRA_MODULES from an
environmental variable. To add a custom module mymodule in
path/mymodule the variable ZEPHYR_EXTRA_MODULES can be set in
`.zephyrrc` as `export ZEPHYR_EXTRA_MODULES=path/mymodule`.

We are observing warnings when test-compiling toolchain flags that
look like:
cannot find entry symbol _start; defaulting to 00000000000010d4
To fix this warning we explicitly set an entry point to an arbitrary
address. The files are only compiled, not run, so the entry point does
not need to be correct.

Encountered situation when sdk_version string was empty
(as the result of corrupted installation).
The version should had 0.0.0 format.
Patch add check for this and descriptive failure message.

Some confluence of recent changes resulted in builds with
application-specific bindings being unable to find bindings present in
the system directory. Add quotes and splits as necessary to propagate
multiple directories through the system.

Add qemu_x86_long board (with CONFIG_X86_LONGMODE=y) for testing.
This requires adding support to soc/ia32 for long mode (trivial),
and adding a quick 64- to 32-bit ELF conversion before invoking
QEMU, which apparently doesn't like 64-bit kernel files.

It turns out that 'check_compiler_flag' has not been working for flags
that start with -Wno-. This has caused old compilers to accidentally
use flags that they do not support.
To fix this we check for compatibility with the appropriate -W flag
instead and infer the -Wno- compatibility from this check.

Now when SMP support for ARC is available we may introduce a simulation
platform which might be used for testing & development for SMP setups.
One important note is stand-alone nSIM (as well as its "Free" flavour)
doesn't support SMP simulation so we have to switch to use of nSIM via
proprietary MetaWare debugger [1] and so:
1. We introduce new emulation target "mdb"
2. It's only possible to run that platform for those who
have MetaWare tools installed and valid license.
Though QEMU port for ARC is in work at the moment and once we
open that port and it has SMP support we'll switch to it and everybody
will be able to try ARC HS with SMP.

The xlnx-zcu102 qemu machine is the only one that supports a Cortex-R
processor. However, its main CPUs are Cortex A53s which requires the
aarch64 qemu binary to run.

For now we enforce the medany code model for 64-bit builds as we get
reloc issues otherwise. The instruction set and ABI are also set to
soft-float usage.
The ilp32 ABI is explicitly specified on 32-bit build to make sure
it is not using a wrong default if the same toolchain is used for both
32- and 64-bit builds. The archittecture options are the same as the
SDK's riscv32 toolchain default in that case.

requires a min of the 0.10.2 SDK, so bump the version before we make

The main change is the elimination of the bootstrapper, a design flaw
/ misfeature.
Update the documentation to be compatible with the 0.6.x releases as
well. This has to be done atomically, as there were incompatible
changes. Make use of the versionchanged and versionadded directives
to begin keeping track of how these APIs are evolving.
(Note that west 0.6.0 will remain compatible with the extension
commands in Zephyr v1.14 LTS as long as that is still alive. This
change is targeted towards Zephyr 2.0 users.)
This requires a bump in the shippable container and allows us to
simplify the west_commands test procedure.

The SDK version is of the form X.Y.Z. Change the cmake scripts to be
based on X.Y of the version. This allows us to easily support newer
toolchains without having to explicitly add cmake files for the version
as well as removes duplication between those files.

With the upcoming riscv64 support, it is best to use "riscv" as the
subdirectory name and common symbols as riscv32 and riscv64 support
code is almost identical. Then later decide whether 32-bit or 64-bit
compilation is wanted.

Depending on how compiler is built, it prints a different include
directory with `--print-file-name=include`. What we want, instead, is
directories with `stddef.h` and `include-fixed/limits.h`.
This commit explicitly specify the header files we want to use, then
take the directory from the returned path.

ARC nSIM simulates pretty much any modern ARC core,
moreover it emulates a lot of different core features so
it is possible to play with them even wo real hardware.
Thus we add yet another ARC core family to be used on simulated
nSIM board.
For now it's just a basic configuration with ARC UART for
smoke-testing of Zephyr on ARC HS CPUs.

The ARC HS is a family of high performance CPUs from Synopsys
capable of running wide range of applications from heavy DPS
calculation to full-scale OS.
Still as with other ARC cores ARC HS might be tailored to
a particular application.
As opposed to EM cores ARC HS cores always have support of unaligned
data access and by default GCC generates such a data layout with
so we have to always enable unaligned data access in runtime otherwise
on attempt to access such data we'd see "Unaligned memory exception".
Note we had to explicitly mention CONFIG_CPU_ARCEM=y in
all current defconfigs as CPU_ARC{EM|HS} are now parts of a
choice so we cannot simply select ether option in board's Kconfig.
And while at it change "-mmpy-option" of ARC EM to "wlh1"
which is the same as previously used "6" but matches
Programmer's Reference Manual (PRM) and is more human-friendly.

The method for getting a memory usage report printed during build, is
based on a GNU linker (ld) option flag, and thus is not necessarily
supported by other toolchain binary tools.
The introduced cmake macro allows for a given toolchain to specify how
the memory usage report is to be generated, and whether the command for
generation, if any, is to be added to the post_build_commands and the
post_build_byproducts lists of the top level CMakeLists.txt
The intent here is to abstract Zephyr's dependence on toolchains,
thus allowing for easier porting to other, perhaps commercial,
toolchains and/or usecases.

This forms the foundation for the abstraction of the binary tools,
where the following steps are taken:
- Move binary tool resolving, such as objcopy, objdump, readelf and
so forth, out of compiler definitions and place in a dedicated binary
tools folder with the binary tools supplier as subfolder, similar to
the compiler and linker directories.
- Create binary tool sets, gnu, host-gnu and llvm.
- Each toolchain selects the required set of binary tools by setting
BINTOOLS via its generic.cmake as it also does for compiler and linker.
The intent here is to abstract Zephyr's dependence on toolchains,
thus allowing for easier porting to other, perhaps commercial,
toolchains and/or usecases.

Add a new DTS/binding parser to scripts/dts/ for generating
generated_dts_board.conf and generated_dts_board_unfixed.h.
The old code is kept to generate some deprecated defines, using the
--deprecated-only flag. It will be removed later.
The new parser is implemented in three files in scripts/dts/:
dtlib.py:
A low-level .dts parsing library. This is similar to devicetree.py in
the old code, but is a general robust DTS parser that doesn't rely on
preprocessing.
edtlib.py (e for extended):
A library built on top of dtlib.py that brings together data from DTS
files and bindings and creates Device instances with all the data for
a device.
gen_defines.py:
A script that uses edtlib.py to generate generated_dts_board.conf and
generated_dts_board_unfixed.h. Corresponds to extract_dts_includes.py
and the files in extract/ in the old code.
testdtlib.py:
Test suite for dtlib.py. Can be run directly as a script.
testedtlib.py (uses test.dts and test-bindings/):
Test suite for edtlib.py. Can be run directly as a script.
The test suites will be run automatically in CI.
The new code turns some things that were warnings (or not checked) in
the old code into errors, like missing properties that are specified
with 'category: required' in the binding for the node.
The code includes lots of documentation and tries to give helpful error
messages instead of Python errors.

We need to pass -m64 instead of -m32 when CONFIG_64BIT is set.
This is pretty x86 centric. Many platforms don't have the ability
to select between 32-bits or 64-bits builds and either of those should
be dropped in that case with restriction on the available configuration
done elsewhere. But for the time being this allows for testing both.

Not all DTS changes are board specific and we should support overlays
that can be used with multiple boards. For example with a sensor, for
example:

This will work with any board that has &arduino_i2c defined, but should

The Particle mesh feather boards provide device-tree overlays that
allow individual applications to select the SPI peripheral to be
used for the pins associated with a specific labelled SPI device.
This is necessary because different peripheral instances have slightly
different properties.
Add BOARD_DIR to DTS_ROOTS so these shared files can be located when
included from application-specific overlays.

sanitycheck takes any "extra_config" list found in the testcase.yaml
file and generates an "overlay" file from it. This file is placed in
the per-test build directory and passed to cmake/kconfig.cmake through a
-DOVERLAY_CONF= option set in the (also) generated sanity-out/Makefile.
This commit moves this generated config overlay to a subdirectory one
level down from the build directory, otherwise kconfig.cmake picks it
up *twice*: once from the -DOVERLAY_CONF= option already mentioned above
and a second time because kconfig.cmake scans the build directory and
blindly picks up ALL files ending with .conf[*]. The second pickup is
problematic because kconfig.cmake currently gives it the top precedence,
even higher than anything the user espressed with --extra-args=CONFIG_*
Here's a quick and simple demonstration of the issue fixed by this
commit:

For more background this issue was found while using the recipe in
commit message 4afcc0f8af
[*] picking up all .conf files is debatable but a much bigger debate
with backward compatibility implications. This small fix makes
absolutely zero difference to anyone or anything not using sanitycheck.

This allows for inclusion of out-of-tree toolchain cmake files
relating to compiler and linker for both target and generic
toolchains.
The base path used was ZEPHYR_BASE, instead of TOOLCHAIN_ROOT, thus
making it impossible to load the out-of-tree toolchain specific
cmake files.
In addition, the generic toolchain may now specify a generic cmake
file for the linker, similar to the target toolchain linker.
The intent here is to abstract Zephyr's dependence on toolchains,

Commit f57ba2d30c ("cmake: toolchain_cc_imacros: don't use space
separated arguments") moved toolchain_cc_imacros() to using the long
argument format in order to avoid spaces that CMake uses to delimitate
and deduplicate arguments.
It seems that xcc doesn't support the --imacros=foo form. However
it does support the short "combined" -imacrosfoo form (without space).
So let's use that instead and document the caviat.

target_sources() documentation states:
Relative source file paths are interpreted as being relative to the
current source directory (i.e. CMAKE_CURRENT_SOURCE_DIR).
Remove spurious code duplicating cmake's behaviour. It proved to be a
time-consuming red herring while debugging some path-related issue and
"less is more".

This adds the necessary bits to utilize the x86_64 toolchain
built by sdk-ng for x86_64 when toolchain variant is either
zephyr or xtools. This allows decoupling the builds from
the host toolchain.
Newlib is also available with this toolchain so remove
the Kconfig restriction on CONFIG_NEWLIB_LIBC.

Because CMake explicitly deduplicates arguments, it is not possible
to use toolchain_cc_imacros() multiple times as the later "-imacros"
are stripped away, leaving the associated file arguments dangling.
The documented workaround in the CMake manual involves some "SHELL:..."
construct but that doesn't get through zephyr_compile_options()
undammaged.
Let's simply remove this issue altogether by replacing "-imacros x.h"
with the joined form "--imacros=x.h" instead. Both gcc and clang
support this syntax.
FYI, this joined form is also available for other arguments such as:
-include x.h --> --include=x.h
-A foo --> --assert=foo
-D foo --> --define-macro=foo
-U foo --> --undefine-macro=foo
Etc.

cmake has a number of issues dealing with symbolic links:

This helps by letting us add checks for when the runner has already
been set. There is documentation saying you can set
-DBOARD_DEBUG_RUNNER at the command line and have it take effect,
which turns out not to be true for a large number of boards.
A status message helps the user debug.
(We'll address the existing in-tree boards in the next patch.)

With gcc 9.1.x on fedora 30 we are getting new warnings that turn into

This is a graphical configuration interface written in Tkinter. Like
menuconfig.py, it supports showing all symbols (with invisible symbols
in red) and jumping directly to symbols. Symbol values can also be
changed directly from the jump-to dialog.
This interface should feel a lot smoother than menuconfig.py on Windows.
When single-menu mode is enabled, a single menu is shown at a time, like
in the terminal menuconfig. Only this mode distinguishes between symbols
defined with 'config' and symbols defined with 'menuconfig'.
Compatible with both Python 2 and Python 3. Has been tested on X11,
Windows, and macOS.
To avoid having to carry around a bunch of GIFs, the image data is
embedded in guiconfig.py. To use separate GIF files instead, change
_USE_EMBEDDED_IMAGES to False. The image files can be found in
https://github.com/ulfalizer/Kconfiglib/tree/screenshots/guiconfig.

With the addition of a local CMake variable ZEPHYR_BASE that mirrors the
value of the environment variable the documentation build broke on
Windows. This is because CMake was incorrectly interpreting backslashes
present in the Windows path as escaping characters. In order to avoid
this, use CMake's built-in file(TO_CMAKE_PATH) functionality, which
converts the path to a canonical version using forward slashes only.
At the same time rework boilerplate.cmake to use the same mechanism
instead of manually replacing backslashes and removing trailing ones.

on non-XIP system, SRAM is the default region, and relocated .data
section and .bss section of SRAM shouldn't be inserted between
_image_rom_start and _image_rom_end, because the memory region between
_image_rom_start and _image_rom_end will construct the mpu ro region.
Also for the newly added memory region on non-XIP system, the
relocated .text secition and .rodata section should also be mpu aligned.

On some systems where you don't have access to `PATH` and you can't
set the `ENV{PATH}` variable. You need to be able to pass the path
to the west executable down to the python script so it is better
for it to be set explicitly than assuming that it exsists as a
part of the PATH/executables in the shell being called.

While configure_linker_script() may be useful for other linkers, it
currently only aimed at GNU ld. To really be useful among different
linkers, we would need to abstract its usage of the C preprocessor.

Modern versions of GDB support multiple architectures
with the same binary.
In fact, Ubuntu stopped shipping a gdb-arm-none-eabi
package, gdb-multiarch should be used instead.
This fixes a failure on those systems where otherwise CMAKE_GDB will be
assigned to CMAKE_GDB-NOTFOUND.

When importing a pre compiled imported library it is currently
required to perform three steps.
This commit introduces a helper function which allows the

The logic is practically intact and is the following:
1. Use any host installed llvm/clang in the path in case
ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT=llvm is requested alone.
2. This can be further restricted with TOOLCHAIN_HOME.
3. And can be further overridden with CLANG_ROOT_DIR,
like previously.
So, only the unconditional restriction to /usr is lifted.
Together with fixing the unconditional set of TOOLCHAIN_HOME
by host tools for non-toolchain needs, this makes the logic
more flexible.
Now, after the logic is controllable by TOOLCHAIN_HOME, 3)
might be an extra, but is left intact for backward compatibility.

The LINKER variable is introduced to follow the same logic and flow as
the existing COMPILER variable: That is, each TOOLCHAIN is responsible
for choosing COMPILER and LINKER.
Currently, Zephyr's build system is hardcoded for GNU ld.
Reflect this in LINKER by letting all existing toolchains use GNU ld.

In windows an additional / is added when using zephyr-env.cmd
this causes a build error in some scenarios. It also creates
ugly file paths.

If SDK_VERSION for whatever reason is unset cmake will end up in an
inifite recursion loop, which for me crashed using cmake version
3.13.4 and exits with an error using 3.14.1.
This may happen if ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT is set to "zephyr", but
ZEPHYR_SDK_INSTALL_DIR is invalid (or unset).

Just like board's can be placed in out-of-tree BOARD_ROOT's, we now
support DeviceTree sources and bindings being placed in out-of-tree
DTS_ROOT's.
This required for out-of-tree drivers that use DeviceTree.
To implement this we get rid of various user-settable CMake variables
like DTS_APP_BINDINGS, DTS_APP_INCLUDE, and instead have ZEPHYR_BASE,
APPLICATION_SOURCE_DIR and out-of-tree directories conform to using
the same DTS_ROOT concept and directory structure.

All DT include directories are system directories, except for
dts/common. There is no reason for dts/common to diverge, so we align
it with the other directories to be consistent.

After the rework in #12403, specifying a shield which has overlay
out of the tree causes unnecessary inclusions of overlays.
For every board root, overlays that have same index as
expected overlay are being included.
Fix this by removing already included overlays from SHIELD list.

While this race seems unlikely and harmless let's play it safe and
implement the usual solution: temporary file + atomic rename.
The race is unlikely and maybe even harmless because:
- Only sanitycheck seems to invoke cmake concurrently.
- Users rarely delete their ~/.cache/zephyr/ToolchainCapabilityDatabase/
- All concurrent cmake processes write the same, single byte to the same
files.
- Creating a single byte is at least very fast, so extremely short
window for others to read an empty file.

Update the files which contain no license information with the
'Apache-2.0' SPDX license identifier. Many source files in the tree are
missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance
tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of Zephyr, which is Apache version 2.

PR #14776 / commit 915a353255 changed function
zephyr_library_compile_options() to use MD5 instead of RANDOM for build
reproduction reasons. As later predicted by Sebastian Bøe in the PR
(thx), the names generated for these pseudo-libraries won't be unique
anymore if the exact same flag gets added more than once.
To reproduce the issue, simply add the following two lines in some
CMakeLists.txt file like samples/hello_world/CMakeLists.txt:
zephyr_library_compile_options("-Dfubar=barfu")
zephyr_library_compile_options("-Dfubar=barfu")
cmake will then fail like this:

Kconfig.modules used to be an empty file when no modules. PR #14667 /
commit bd7569f272 "cmake: Extracted Zephyr module processing into
python script" unintentionally changed that to no Kconfig.modules file
at all when no west and no modules. kconfig.py doesn't like that and
crashes. Restore the empty file.

1. To support being called multiple times, the function
zephyr_library_compile_options() uses unique
options_interface_lib_${random} names. These only need to be unique, not
random. So replace them with a simple MD5 hash of the ${item} argument.
To reproduce quickly run:
sanitycheck -b -p qemu_xtensa --tag shell
... a few times and compare the output directories.
This bug sits for now at the top of the list of build reproducibility
issues the most bizarre and difficult to root cause. When running
sanitycheck over a large sample of configurations it was affecting
only qemu_xtensa/**/zephyr/arch/arch/xtensa/core/startup/Makefile
files (and their corresponding CMakeFiles/TargetDirectories.txt),
randomly ordering the following three Make targets and only these
three: rebuild_cache, edit_cache, arch__xtensa__core__startup.
The key to root causing was cmake --trace-expand which prints the random
string.
2. generate_unique_target_name_from_filename() also generated a random
string for the same uniqueness reason. This one was easier to root cause
and reproduce with: sanitycheck --tag gen_inc_file

Currently, the Kconfig.modules file is placed in the build directory
relative to the CMake "project". But technically, the file is not
project-specific, but global, or build-directory specific.
So we move it up one level to the CMAKE_BINARY_DIR instead. Currently,
there is only one project, so this change has no effect, but this
enables us to have multiple projects in the future, which again
enables multi-image builds.

Prepend -m32 to existing flags as opposed to silently override and
discard them:
- set(CMAKE_<tool>_FLAGS -m32 )
+ string(PREPEND CMAKE_<tool>_FLAGS " -m32")
This stops discarding additional flags passed with either cmake
-DCMAKE_<tool>_FLAGS="-fu -bar" or cmake -C params.cmake.
Note this bug was affecting only the combination of x86 and
CMAKE_<tool>_FLAGS. x86_64 wasn't affected and other, non-empty
CMAKE_<tool>_FLAGS_[DEBUG/RELEASE/etc.] weren't affected either.
Also convert flags string to list when invoking --print-libgcc-file-name
to support more than one CMAKE_C_FLAGS.

Out-of-tree Kconfig frontends need to know which environment variables
are exported by Zephyr to Kconfig.
To support this we allow additional Kconfig python frontend targets to
be specified from out-of-tree.
This support was added on request by a third-party with a custom
Kconfig frontend.

When we build with newlib we don't set -nostdinc. In that case make
sure that we leave it to the toolchain to set the system include paths.
The one exception to leaving to the toolchain to set the system include
paths is the path to the newlib headers. Since we build
with -ffreestanding we need to make sure the newlib header path is the
before the toolchain headers. Otherwise the toolchain's 'freestanding'
headers get picked up and that causes issues (for example getting PRI*64
defined properly from inttypes.h due to __STDC_HOSTED__ being '0').
For newlib we accomplish this by having the only system header specified
by zephyr_system_include_directories() being just the newlib headers.
Note: for minlibc we leave things alone as things just happen to work as
the -I include of the libc headers takes precedence over -isystem so we
get the libc headers over the toolchain ones. For the newlib case it
appears that setting both -I and -isystem for the same dir causes the
-I to be ignored.

If one invokes cmake with west in the PATH but not inside a west
installation (i.e. in a monorepo setup), west will try to list the
zephyr modules issuing an error message.
Test if west list succeeds before using result for module testing.

Users often get confused when they change Kconfig sources and then
rebuild only to discover that nothing happens. To fix this we add a
dependency between re-running cmake, and all Kconfig sources, similair
to how touching CMakeLists.txt files cause CMake to re-run.

In-tree, all usage of 'set_conf_file' is implementing the same
pattern (with some inconsequential differences).
To reduce copy-paste and get closer to dropping support for
'set_conf_file', we include this pattern into the built-in set of
patterns.
'set_conf_file' is causing issues for future extensions,
e.g. multi-image support, and is also the source of a lot of
duplicated code.
Note support for 'set_conf_file' is not dropped, it is only marked as
deprecated.

MISRA rules (see #9892) forbid alloca() and family, even though those
features can be valuable performance and memory size optimizations
useful to Zephyr.
Introduce a MISRA_SANE kconfig, which when true enables a gcc error
condition whenever a variable length array is used.
When enabled, the mempool code will use a theoretical-maximum array
size on the stack instead of one tailored to the current pool
configuration.
The rbtree code will do similarly, but because the theoretical maximum
is quite a bit larger (236 bytes on 32 bit platforms) the array is
placed into struct rbtree instead so it can live in static data (and
also so I don't have to go and retune all the test stack sizes!).
Current code only uses at most two of these (one in the scheduler when
SCHED_SCALABLE is selected, and one for dynamic kernel objects when
USERSPACE and DYNAMIC_OBJECTS are set).
This tunable is false by default, but is selected in a single test (a
subcase of tests/kernel/common) for coverage. Note that the I2C and
SPI subsystems contain uncorrected VLAs, so a few platforms need to be
blacklisted with a filter.

We had an if-statement around policy 79 because we used to need to
support CMake versions before 3.13.0. But now 3.13.1 is the minimum
required version so the if statement always evaluates to true and can
be omitted.

Contrary to all other toolchains, the xcc toolchain had a hardocded
installation path. Replace this with XTENSA_TOOLCHAIN_PATH so users can
install in different locations.

When using xtools as toolchain, cmake searches the toolchain home
directory. However, if the first toolchain directory does not
begin with any character before "s", "sources" (if exists) would
become the first directory being probed. Since it does not
conform to "arch-vendor-abi" naming, cmake would fail.
So exclude "sources" from the list to avoid this issue.

We need to set SYSROOT_DIR as the last thing we do on target.cmake so
we reset how its set for xtensa. Otherwise when we build with newlib
we will not get the proper path to newlib headers in the toolchain.
This matches the behavior of 0.9.5/target.cmake

We where defining the variable NOSTDINC_F after we tried to use it.
Move the definition before the first reference fixes things. When
-nostdinc now enabled we need to explicitly add the compiler include
path for x86_64 based builds (x86_64 and ARCH_POSIX).

Introduce toolchain_cc_cpp_*-family of macros.
Move the following into the toolchain_cc_cpp_* macros:
* Common base set of flags
* C++ standard version
* RTTI
* Exceptions
These macros must be implemented by every compiler port.
These macros set the respective flags, but leaves logic and control to
the root CMakeLists.txt file.

Each macro represents a general optimization class.
Each macro is then responsible for setting an output variable to that
class-of-optimization's flag.

Make kconfigfunctions.py agnostic to where GENERATED_DTS_BOARD_CONF is
located.
We don't want to encode the path of GENERATED_DTS_BOARD_CONF into more
places than necessary. Also, re-using GENERATED_DTS_BOARD_CONF makes
it easier to change where generated_dts_board.conf is located.

This commit allows for Zephyr modules to be natively integrated into
the build system with CMakeLists.txt and Kconfig files.
The sourcing of module files are done in following order:
- If <module>/zephyr/module.yml exists, use cmake and kconfig settings
for sourcing of additional file
- Else if <module>/zephyr/CMakeLists.txt exists, source this file into
CMake build tree and add <module>/zephyr/Kconfig as osource
If none of the above files are present, the project is considered to
not be a Zephyr module

This commit introduces a Kconfig option for ARM SoCs, to signify
that the SoC implements a double-precision floating point unit.
The option is utilized in cmake/fpu-for-gcc-m-cpu to select the
appropriate GCC compile option flag for FPU.

We had been search for <BOARD>.yaml, however its possible that doesn't
match anything and we actually use <BOARD>_defconfig in
boilerplate.cmake. So search for *_defconfig instead of *.yaml to
generate the <BOARD> list.

PR #9522 series ending with commit c2c9265b7d ("tests: cmsis: Disable
two cmsis portability tests on x86_64") added -mx32 support for the
x86_64 ARCH and qemu_x86_64. While this was implemented in
"compiler/gcc/target.cmake" as fall back from cross-compilation to the
host compiler, it worked with a direct ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT=host
too.
Later, -lgcc was added to "compiler/host-gcc/target.cmake" by PR #12674
to fix the -m32 x86 build. This broke the x86_64 build when using
ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT=host because even "multilib" packages usually
don't feature the -mx32 version of libgcc.
Fix this by excluding -lgcc in compiler/host-gcc/target.cmake just like
compiler/gcc/target.cmake always did for x86_64.

Introduce the first of the toolchain_cc-family of macros:
toolchain_cc_security_fortify and toolchain_cc_security_canaries.
No functional change expected.
Fortify source is not supported by Clang, but this commit retains
current behavior.
This is motivated by the wish to abstract Zephyr's usage of toolchains,
permitting easier porting to other (commercial) toolchains.

Add missing -lgcc when compiling with ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT=host
merely copying some existing code from
'compiler/{clang,gcc}/target.cmake'.
This fixes compilation for the following boards with an x86
microprocessor:
galileo, minnowboard, qemu_x86, qemu_x86_nommu, up_squared,
up_squared_sbl
Compilation of the following boards with an X86_IAMCU microcontroller
still fail with a "cannot find -lgcc" error:
arduino_101, qemu_x86_iamcu, quark_d2000_crb, quark_se_c1000_devboard,
tinytile
This is _not_ a regression because these boards _already_ failed with
"undefined reference to __udivdi3" and other libgcc symbols.

This fixes the following error on all x86 BOARDs (qemu_x86,
galileo,... see "make usage" for the complete list) when compiling
assembly files with ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT=host:
cc1: error: CPU you selected does not support x86-64 instruction set
This also fixes the following error when compiling minnowboard,
up_squared and up_squared_sbl boards with ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT=host:
cc1: error: -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 is not between 3 and 12
This fix alone is not enough to compile any of these boards; however it
moves compilation much further to the next, unrelated failure(s),
namely: 'undefined __udivdi3' and other libgcc symbols for all x86
boards; + some other, additional issues for some boards. See next
commit.

A GCC-based toolchain may require additional, toolchain-specific
values in CMAKE_REQUIRED_FLAGS to perform compiler checks properly,
but gcc.cmake clobbers any values the user provides.
Preserve them instead, allowing users to give their own compiler
checking flags at generation time.
The details for the particular issue that inspired this are described
in https://github.com/pulp-platform/pulpino/issues/240.

Ensure that changes to DeviceTree sources cause CMake to be re-run
when make/ninja is invoked.
Note that this is not perfect, as it does not cover files that are
\#included, but it will cover most DT changes.

extract_dts_includes.py has been generating DT output and then
concatenating it with fixup header files to create
'generated_dts_board.h'.
In this patch we instead introduce a source file named
'generated_dts_board.h' and have it \#include the appropriate DT
output and fixup files.
This results in a simpler system because users can now read
'generated_dts_board.h' as C source code to see how fixup files and
generated DT output relate to each other. Whereas before they would
have to either read documentation or python code to gain the same
understanding.
Also, it reduces the scope and complexity of one of our most bloated
python scripts, extract_dts_includes.py.

dtc 1.4.6 doesn't support the -Wno-unique_unit_address flag. We need to
check that the flag is supported before using it on pre dtc-1.4.7
versions.

Depending on the installed and enabled SDK, we now load the right
configuration allowing people to migrate gracefully to the new SDK.
The selection is done based on the version of the SDK. Minimal required
SDK is still kept as 0.9.5.

In Zephyr we have dts in which multiple peripherals can be at the same
MMIO address. So we want to disable the `unique_unit_address` check via
(-Wno-unique_unit_address). However, newer dtc support a check that
makes sure if we have duplicate unit-address devices that only one is
enabled. So if the dtc flag is supported we enable
(-Wunique_unit_address_if_enabled).

Add a function that let's us check if a given dtc flag can be used with
the version of dtc we have. This lets us utilize specific warning flags
that might not exist in older dtc versions and still have things work
properly.

There is an effort underway to make most of the Zephyr build script's
reentrant. Meaning, the build scripts can be executed multiple times
during the same CMake invocation.
Reentrancy enables several use-cases, the motivating one is the
ability to build several Zephyr executables, or images, for instance a
bootloader and an application.
For build scripts to be reentrant they cannot be directly referencing
global variables, like target names, but must instead reference
variables, which can vary from entry to entry.
Therefore, in this patch, we replace global targets with variables.

Rather than specifying SHIELD via Kconfig, we move it to being
specified via the command line, similar to board.
So we can do:
-DSHIELD=x_nucleo_iks01a1
or, for multiple shields:
-DSHIELD="x_nucleo_iks01a1 frdm_kw41z"
Following cmake change, update x_nucleo_iks01a1 sample in order
not to enable CONFIG option anymore but set SHIELD cmake option.

By default Renode is searched for in the system PATH.
The PID is stored in renode.pid - the application must be killed with a
signal after a test.
With the XWT gui layer disabled all UART output is directed to the
stdout.

This patch adds a x86_64 architecture and qemu_x86_64 board to Zephyr.
Only the basic architecture support needed to run 64 bit code is
added; no drivers are added, though a low-level console exists and is
wired to printk().
The support is built on top of a "X86 underkernel" layer, which can be
built in isolation as a unit test on a Linux host.
Limitations:
+ Right now the SDK lacks an x86_64 toolchain. The build will fall
back to a host toolchain if it finds no cross compiler defined,
which is tested to work on gcc 8.2.1 right now.
+ No x87/SSE/AVX usage is allowed. This is a stronger limitation than
other architectures where the instructions work from one thread even
if the context switch code doesn't support it. We are passing
-no-sse to prevent gcc from automatically generating SSE
instructions for non-floating-point purposes, which has the side
effect of changing the ABI. Future work to handle the FPU registers
will need to be combined with an "application" ABI distinct from the
kernel one (or just to require USERSPACE).
+ Paging is enabled (it has to be in long mode), but is a 1:1 mapping
of all memory. No MMU/USERSPACE support yet.
+ We are building with -mno-red-zone for stack size reasons, but this
is a valuable optimization. Enabling it requires automatic stack
switching, which requires a TSS, which means it has to happen after
MMU support.
+ The OS runs in 64 bit mode, but for compatibility reasons is
compiled to the 32 bit "X32" ABI. So while the full 64 bit
registers and instruction set are available, C pointers are 32 bits
long and Zephyr is constrained to run in the bottom 4G of memory.

work for all but obscure cases than break outright.

These variables affect how CMake locates programs, libraries, include
files, and CMake packages. But the defaults are sufficient for Zephyr.
NEVER: Only host system's root will be searched.
ONLY: Only the paths specified by a variable will be searched. Typically
these paths point to cross-compilers.

Split up the toolchain configuration into two phases, generic and
target. The 'generic' phase configures the toolchain just enough to be
able to preprocess DT files. The 'target' phase completes the
configuration with target-specific configuration.

When building with clang symbols from the runtime library, like
__divdi3 were not being resolved. To fix this we add the "library path
for the currently used compiler runtime library" to the link path.

The 'llvm' and 'clang' build scripts have been named strangely. It is
more natural for 'clang' to be the compiler, and 'llvm' to be the
toolchain.
This commit rectifies this by renaming the files.

CMake parses the Kconfig output for 'CONFIG_*' symbols and adds them
to the CMake namespace.
It does the same for DT, but has only been including 'CONFIG_' symbols
and been ignoring the 'DT_' symbols.
For DeviceTree to be useful, it's information needs to be accessible
from CMake, just like Kconfig is.
To this end we also introduce the 'DT_' symbols into the CMake
namespace.

Due to popular demand there exists an experimental feature with
undefined and undocumented semantics that permits Kconfig option to be
specified on the CMake CLI.
Like so:
cmake -DCONFIG_BUILD_OUTPUT_BIN=y
This patch fixes a bug where it was possible to have a mismatch
between the build/zephyr/.config file and the CMake namespace of
'CONFIG_' values.
We now pop all CLI Kconfig symbols from the CMakeCache.txt and then
push only the CLI Kconfig symbols that exist in the active .config
file.

ARCH is available before CONFIG_ARCH, and is otherwise identical. So

Users expect that not just "some" compatible python is detected, but
also that it will be the 'python' executable from PATH, at least when
this executable is valid.
To this end rewrite FindPythonInterp to give this executable the
highest priority.

In CMake 3.13 a warning is produced if one does not explicitly state
what the policy for CMP0079 should be. To resolve this warning we set
policy CMP0079 to OLD.
This is expected to have no semantical change. When we want a
semantical change we can flip the policy and port the build scripts to
the new behaviour.

This patch creates a rule in the cmake to trigger the generation
of linker_relocate.ld and code_relocation.c files.
The linker_relocate.ld will create appropriate sections and will
link the required functions or variables from all the selected
files.
The code_relocation.c will have code that is needed for
initializing data sections and copy of text sections(if XIP).
Also this will contain code that is needed for zeroing of bss.
The procedure to invoke this feature is:
1. Enable CONFIG_CODE_RELOCATION in the prj.conf
2. Inside CMakeList.txt in the project we need to mention
all the files that needs to get relocated.
zephyr_kernel_code_relocate(src/*.c SRAM2)
Where the first argument is the file/files and the second
argument is the memory where it has be placed.
NOTE: The file argument supports glob expressions.
NOTE: Step 2 can be done as many times as required. And relative
paths can be given here.

Some toolchains are built with multilib enabled in order to provide
multiple versions of the same library, optimized for different ABI
or architecture. They require the the ABI/architecture/CPU selection
options to be passed at linked time. This is important for example
when linking with newlib.

Allow user to add externally built hex files to the cmake property
HEX_FILES_TO_MERGE. The hex files in this list will be merged
with the hex file generated when building the zephyr application.
This allows users to leverage the application configuration
available in Kconfig and CMake to help decide what hex file
should be merged with the zephyr application.

Align how DT and Kconfig print log output to be more consistent.
For instance, Kconfig does not state which header file it generates,
so we remove this from DT.
Also, Kconfig states which sources it uses, which is useful to know
when there is a build failure, so we align with Kconfig by printing
the DT source and overlay files.

The 'FindPythonInterp' that is distributed with CMake 3.8 is affected

When we move DT infront of Kconfig we are going to need access to a C
toolchain before Kconfig is evaluated. This means it will not be
possible to specify the toolchain used through Kconfig.
To deal with this we ...
Drop support for specifying CROSS_COMPILE through Kconfig. Still
available is the ability to specify CROSS_COMPILE through the
environment or through a CMake variable.

CMake prints a helpful error message with all the boards supported
when a board name has been misspelled. But CMake also
remembers (caches) the corrupted board name and refuses to change it
until the board directory has been cleared.
CMake is rightly hesitant to change the board, as other cached
variables depend on what the board is. But it is safe to change the
board just after it has been selected, because we verify it's
correctness before using it to calculate other variables.
So to support the use-case of changing a misspelled board
name (without clearing the build directory) we unset the cached board
when it is invalid.
Also; change the now unused (in-tree) macro 'assert_with_usage' to
'print_usage'.

In addition to zephyr/include and zephyr/dts also scan
the dts directory within the application source directory
for files included by the DTS.
Allows to have application specific DTS includes. This
is especially useful for out of tree drivers.

set the path to the Python executable (which can be python,
python3, py -3, etc) as an environment variable so that
Kconfig shell invocations can use it like:

Almost all labels generated by the extracting script are now prefixed
with DT_. The only exceptions are:
- stuff with 'base_label' specified in yaml bindings
- items specified by 'regs_config' and 'name_config' dictionaries
in globals.py module
- FLASH related labels generated by flash.extract() called separately
from generate_node_definitions(), e.g. FLASH_WRITE_BLOCK_SIZE -
these are used directly, not through fixups, from existing code
so I didn't want to touch them now
Labels generated for aliases are additionally prefixed with information
from the 'compatible' property, e.g. DT_GPIO_LEDS_LED0_* is generated
instead of LED0_*. To provide backward compatibility for code that uses
LEDx_* and SWx_* labels in their previous forms, a command line option
named 'old-alias-names' is added to the extraction script. This option
causes that the labels for aliases are generated in both old and new
forms. Currently this option is always enabled in dts.cmake.

MSYS support was added as a stop-gap while native windows support was
unsupported. Now that Native windows support is stable we can drop
support for MSYS.
Dropping support for MSYS fixes#11260 and allows us to spend more
resources on native windows support.

When Python3 is not found the build system will warn the user and then
continue. Python3 is required and continuing can only confuse the user
with new off-topic error messages.

XCC does not support the "-undef" flag so set NOSYSDEF_CFLAGS to
empty string to fix compile warning.
Also, XCC does not supply the macro __SIZEOF_LONG__ which breaks
the build. So define it.

Not all compiles/linkers support the GCC flags to not include standard
defines, include files and libraries. So make these parameters such
that the toolchain can define them when supported.
Also, according to documentation, -nostdlib does the same for both
-nostartfiles and -nodefaultlibs. So remove the redundant ones.

The CMake extension 'generate_inc_file_for_target()' has some code for
generating a unique target name that is needed elsewhere, for instance
by DeviceTree.

The Zephyr SDK distributes a device-tree-compiler with version
"1.4.6-dirty". As of recently, we have started using flags that are
only present in recent versions of dtc. Like the flag "-E
unit_address_vs_reg".
Users that are opting out of using the Zephyr SDK's host tools are
reporting obscure error messages.
To avoid this we use an appropriate error message when the detected
version is unsupported.

CI sometimes fails with a temporarily corrupted toolchain capabilitiy
database file. Although not proven, there is evidence that CMake's
file(APPEND does not work atomically when there are concurrent writes
and reads of a certain size.
To avoid file appending, we re-write the key-value database
implementation to store keys in filenames and values in individual
single-byte files.
This is (most likely) fixes#9992.
NB: Users that have been overriding the database file location with
the CMake variable ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_CAPABILITY_CACHE must now specify

1. The generator handles just the COMPILE_DEFINITIONS.

For the defines in INTERFACE_COMPILE_DEFINITIONS
a special handling is necessary.
Solution:
The amendment function generates a macro header file
${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR}/zephyr/include/generated/cmake_intdef.h
based on INTERFACE_COMPILE_DEFINITIONS and appends the
defines from the file to
CMAKE_EXTRA_GENERATOR_C_SYSTEM_DEFINED_MACROS.
2. Eclipse CDT4 indexer has problems with CMake 'Eclipse CDT4 - x'
generator projects that use mixed C/C++.
The Eclipse CDT4 indexer is showing a lot of unresolved symbol
errors, when the project was created with CMake generator and
the code is a mix of C and C++.
The root cause of the problem is the g++ built-in __cplusplus macro,
that is passed by CMake generator in the '.cproject' file.
The defines in '.cproject' are always the same for C and C++.
In mixed C/C++ projects, the header files often contain the following
lines to let C++ code call the C functions:
#ifdef __cplusplus
extern "C" {
#endif
< header content >
#ifdef __cplusplus
}
#endif
Whenever the Eclipse CDT4 indexer compiles the code for
code analysis, it has the macro __cplusplus set,
independent of whether standard C or C++ source files are compiled.
The 'extern "C"' confuses the standard C compilation and the indexer
is messed up.
Solution:
The amendment function deletes the __cplusplus entry from
CMAKE_EXTRA_GENERATOR_CXX_SYSTEM_DEFINED_MACROS.
3. The amendment function appends the defines from
${CMAKE_BINARY_DIR}/zephyr/include/generated/autoconf.h to
CMAKE_EXTRA_GENERATOR_C_SYSTEM_DEFINED_MACROS.

Add a new optional TOOLCHAIN_ROOT cmake and environment variable to
specify an alternative location for toolchain cmake files.
When set, Zephyr will look for a toolchain cmake file located in:
${TOOLCHAIN_ROOT}/cmake/toolchain/${ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT}.cmake

The filename dts.fixup is deprecated, dts_fixup.h should be used
instead. This commit detects when fixup files have not been renamed
and errors out with a warning.

The Zephyr configuration system uses many different files in many
different formats. It makes it a lot easier for users to understand
what these files do if when we use the correct file extensions.
To this end we rename the dts.fixup files to the correct file
extension '.h'.
This is a breaking change for out-of-tree fixup files. Such files will
be detected and given an appropriate error message.

As far as testing can tell, all occurences of the "Node has a unit
name, but no reg property" warnings have been fixed. To prevent them
from re-appearing we turn the warning into an error.
This is a breaking change for out-of-tree boards that are affected by
the warning.

It is very inconvenient to maintain an application that both runs on a
Zephyr board and an out-of-tree board.
It forces one to write build scripts like this in the app:
if(BOARD STREQUAL my_out_of_tree_board)
set(BOARD_ROOT some/out/of/tree/board/path)
endif()
To avoid this we change the semantics of BOARD_ROOT. Instead of it
being a path to the board root it is now a prioritized list of board
root directories. Zephyr will append ZEPHYR_BASE to BOARD_ROOT.
This ensures that Zephyr boards can be used when the out-of-tree board
directory can not supply the requested board.

Change the format of KERNELVERSION as it exists in Kconfig to match
it's format elsewhere. Specifically, change from a string format
"1.10.3" to a numerical format.
This format change is a backwards-incompatible change. Any out-of-tree
Kconfig sources that were accessing KERNELVERSION with
$(KERNELVERSION) will need to be ported.
This change is to fix a bug. KERNELVERSION should have always been in
a numerical format. It should have been in a numerical format because;
KERNELVERSION is in a numerical format as a CMake variable and as a C
macro.
The purpose of having KERNELVERSION available in Kconfig is to have
configuration depend on the version, but this is only possible if it
exists in a numerical format[0].
[0] A string comparison of two semver strings does not always result
in a correct version comparison.

KCONFIG_AUTOHEADER is an environment variable that was used by the C
Kconfig tools to determine where the autconf.h file is. After the
migration to python this environment variable became unused.
This patch removes the deprecated env var.

The commit 1b80f00f56 made git describe
failure as fatal. But a failure can happens when no tag is in a
repository. And such a repository might exist for a internal build
system or some test environments.
Zephyr's build system is capable building without a commit hash.
This commit makes it non-fatal again and inform users that the build
system is failed to execute "git describe" but continues building with
KERNEL_VERSION_STRING.

Adds a build system target for the west attach command, which starts a
debugging session without programming the flash.

Update to the latest west. This includes a new 'attach' command. There
are also multi-repo commands, but those won't get exposed to the user
unless they install Zephyr using "west init" + "west fetch" (and not,
say, "git clone").
Replace the launchers; they now detect whether zephyr is part of a
multi-repo installation, and run the west code in its own repository
if that is the case.
This also requires an update to:
- the flash/debug CMakeLists.txt, as the new west package is no longer
executable as a module and must have its main script run by the
interpreter instead.
- the documentation, to reflect a rename and with a hack to fix
the automodule directive in flash-debug.rst for now

If this environment variable is missing, the user gets a rather
confusing cmake error message about "STREQUAL" "gccarmemb" from the
lines below.
Adding quotes to the check makes cmake handle it better and instead
report the problem in the later ASSERT.

In dts.cmake, build shield list. For each shield, check if
associate KCONFIG is enabled and if it is, add matching files
to following new cmake variables:
-DTC_SHIELD_OVERLAY_FILE
-DTC_SHIELD_FIXUP
Then, consume these variables when needed.
Shield overlay is conceived as the very first overlay applied
to the board dts. It intends to build a new board that should
then behave as any other board versus common or user's overlay.

Automatically detect the Kconfig file in it's conventional placement
${APPLICATION_SOURCE_DIR}/Kconfig and set KCONFIG_ROOT accordingly.
'Convention over configuration' is an imporant principle for
minimizing metadata and keeping things consistent. We use this
principle for instance with the file prj.conf.
This commit applies this principle to also re-direrct KCONFIG_ROOT.

This re-applies a patch that was merged in pr #6989, but then
accidentally reverted in a bad merge conflict resolution in pr #6842.
The actual behaviour of CONIG_FP_SOFTABI has not been matching the
documenation. The Kconfig documentation states that floating point
instructions should be generated, but this Kconfig option has been
turning off floating point instructions instead.
This commit causes floating point instructions to be generated when
CONFIG_FP_SOFTABI is enabled, as was originally intended and
documented.
This commit can cause regressions if users have been relying on the
actual behaviour instead of the documented behaviour.

This option selects the Floating point ABI in which hardware
floating point instructions are generated but soft-float calling
conventions.
GCC documentation:
Specifying ‘soft’ causes GCC to generate output containing library
calls for floating-point operations. ‘softfp’ allows the generation of
code using hardware floating-point instructions, but still uses the
soft-float calling conventions. ‘hard’ allows generation of
floating-point instructions and uses FPU-specific calling conventions.

The prefixes might be a leftover from the old 'option env="..."' symbols
(which are no longer needed). Since environment variables can be

Some distros set the environment variable CFLAGS, this will
accidentally affect Zephyr builds.
To fix this we clear the environment variable from within the Zephyr
build system for the duration of the CMake execution.
Until now we have been instructing the user to clear it, but it is
easier for the user if we clear it for him.
The same applies to CXXFLAGS.

Support using an alternate QEMU path for when we want to use a qemu
version not available in the SDK.
To use the alternate qemu version, export QEMU_BIN_PATH and point it
to the bin directory which contains the qemu executables.

zephyr_library_compile_options will apply compile options to a library
with high priority. Due to bug #8438 these compile options have been
applied not only to the library, but also to it's public interface and
therefore to any library that has been linking with the library.
To resolve#8438 we use PRIVATE linking instead of PUBLIC linking.

CMake has several prototypes/signatures for the function
'target_link_libraries'. This commit migrates the usage of
'target_link_libraries' on Zephyr CMake libraries from the old 'plain'
signature to the new '<PRIVATE|PUBLIC|INTERFACE>' signature.
For technical reasons the two signatures can not be mixed. Each
library must exclusively use either the old or new signature.
The 'old' plain signature is equivalent to using the PUBLIC
signature. Migrating to use 'PUBLIC' is therefore expected to be a
safe change.
After the migration it will be possible to use the PRIVATE and
INTERFACE signatures on Zephyr CMake libraries. This is useful for
instance to fix issue 8438.

The old GCC ARM Embedded website on launchpad
(https://launchpad.net/gcc-arm-embedded) has been superseeded by the new
GNU Arm Embedded one
(https://developer.arm.com/open-source/gnu-toolchain/gnu-rm).
This also means a change of name from "GCC" to "GNU". Reflect this in
the enviroment variables so that the proper term is used henceforth.

Due to a misspelling in the existence check for the stored checksum
file, zephyr/.config was always regenerated from the config fragments
(e.g. prj.conf), overwriting any custom zephyr/.config configuration
done in e.g. menuconfig.
This bug was introduced by commit 5402662dd9 ("cmake: kconfig: Fix
rerunning cmake after Kconfig warnings").

Commit b3d165f ("scripts: kconfig: Handle warnings generated
during evaluation") made it common for kconfig.py to fail after writing
zephyr/.config. This confuses the configuration fragment checksum logic
in cmake/kconfig.cmake, because it expects the saved checksum file to
exist if zephyr/.config exists.
The end result is a CMake error when rerunning the configuration after
non-whitelisted Kconfig warnings.
Fix it by only writing zephyr/.config (and zephyr/include/autoconf.h) in
kconfig.py if there are no warnings-turned-errors.
Also check if the saved checksum file exists in kconfig.cmake before
trying to open it. Normally this shouldn't happen though.
Move the writing of the checksum file to before writing zephyr/.config
as well. That way, zephyr/.config only gets written if the other
operations succeed.

When the SDK/toolchain has been incorrectly installed such that the
user does not have permissions to execute it an incomprehensible
errror message occurs.
This patch tests that executing 'gcc --version' does not give an error
code and errors out with an appropriate error message if it does.
This fixes#8977

In order to be able to execute a process at build time (and not at
configure time) in a cross-platform manner while at the same time
redirecting stdout and stderr to files, add a script that wraps CMake's
execute_process() command.
The script can be invoked with identical parameters to execute_process()
but at build time, allowing CMake users to store stdout and stderr in
files in a way that works on all operating systems.

Older Git versions still do not support the -C argument for specifying

between ARMv8-M Mainline MCUs with or withouth the optional DSP
extension. A new Kconfig option: ARMV8_M_DSP, is introduced, to
signify the use of an ARMv8-M MCU with DSP support.

This resolves#5723 by adding support for assigning to Kconfig options
from the CMake CLI.
CMake CLI Kconfig options can be specified like so:
'cmake -DCONFIG_ASSERT=y'
The lifetime of such an option is the same as the lifetime of a CMake
cache variable, and in principle any method of populating the
CMakeCache could be used, such as cmake-gui.
This has been implemented by scanning the CMakeCache variables before
Kconfig is executed and writing any that are prefixed with 'CONFIG_'
to a new Kconfig fragment in the build directory that is merged in
with a high precedence.

The "git describe" call for setting the boot banner is broken. The
--work-tree option sets the checked out work tree, not the directory
containing .git, which is where git describe needs to look for
information on tags.
Use -C instead so it's as if Git were run from the zephyr base
directory instead.

Both variables were used (with the same value) interchangeably
throughout CMake files and per the discussion in GH issue,
ZEPHYR_BASE is preferred.
Also add a comment with explanation of one vs. the other.
Tested by building hello_world for several boards ensuring no errors.

Modify CONF_FILE variable treatment in the cmake infrastructure
to enable the use of CMake lists and semicolon-separated strings
in setting the CONF_FILE list for multiple configuration files.
This change does not impact the current method of using
single-space-separated strings for multiple files.

Someone doing bisects on Zephyr will have to have both older
ZEPHYR_GCC_VARIANT and newer ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT environment
variables defined. Then warning about ZEPHYR_GCC_VARIANT is
confusing. Issue it if only ZEPHYR_GCC_VARIANT is defined, and
ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT isn't.

This cmake macro was changing the control flow of the cmake files.
It is not advisable to modify the callee control flow from inside
a cmake macro.
Hence removing all instances of this macro from the build system.

The Kconfig option TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT (not to be confused with
ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT) is a legacy configuration option that has
very few use-cases and can easily be dropped.
It's functionality is easily covered by CONFIG_X86_IAMCU and
ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT.
This commit removes all references of it from Zephyr.

Continue better integration of the runner subpackage into west by
moving the common runner configuration options into the command
core. This allows commands like "west flash -h" to display help for
common overrides like --kernel-hex.
Adjustments needed to make this happen are:
- Change the build system to separate common configuration values from
runner-specific options and arguments
- Prepare the runner core by defining a new RunnerConfig class that
represents the common configuration, and accepting that from a new
create() method, which replaces create_from_args().
- Convert all concrete runner classes to use the new style of
argument parsing and initialization.
- Group the command options appropriately for help output readability
There's still a bit of tool-specific stuff in the common
configuration (gdb and openocd configuration in particular); a more
generic way to deal with that will be necessary to better support
things like non-GDB debuggers, but that's out of scope of this patch.
All the runner-specific options are still in the runner packge, which
currently prevents them from being included in "west flash -h" etc.
Fixing that is also out of scope of this patch.
This has the ancillary benefit of getting rid of the legacy 'debug'
argument to ZephyrBinaryRunner, which is no longer appropriate since
verbose debug logging is handled by log.py in west.

Since, by design, the west 'flash', 'debug', and 'debugserver'
commands operate the same way as the Makefile targets when given no
arguments, so just delegate to west from cmake/flash/CMakeLists.txt
instead of invoking zephyr_flash_debug.py by hand.
Removing the old script is the first step towards being able to clean
up the command line argument handling in the runner package, which was
always kind of a hack and can be improved now that runner is part of a
larger tool.

This is a stepping-stone to adding runner functionality into west
itself.
Since all of the runner tools assume a Zephyr build directory layout,
this doesn't put anything generic into a Zephyr-specific tool.
Make minimal adjustments to zephyr_flash_debug.py to keep existing
build system targets working unmodified.

Persist all the important information needed by the runner package to
the CMake cache. This serves as a parseable record for various tools
which need to understand how to run the binary.
In particular, it will be used by the west tool, which will be
introduced in subsequent patches.

Add a variant on generate_inc_file_for_target in which the user can
specify the target that the generated file will depend on. This allows
exposing that target to other possible places where a dependency on the
generated file existing might be needed.

Checks if a certain Kconfig is enabled and then do the same
operation as zephyr_library.
If it finds that the Kconfig is not set it will not
create a new library and will stop processing the rest of
the CMakeFile.txt. Usefull in processing the driver Cmake
files.

The original em7d, em9d and em11d are different configurations of
em_starterkit. They have the same peripherals, e.g. uart, spi, gpio
, ddr. The differences of them are in arc core configurations, interrupt
number assignment.
So em7d, em9d and em11d can be viewed in the same SoC family or SoC
series.
Referring other arch's implementation, this commit merges em7d, em9d
and em11d into the same SoC, named snps_emsk. This will eliminate
unnecessary duplication and make it easier for future maintainment.

Remove the C Kconfig tools and various scripts associated with them.
scripts/kconfig/diffconfig is popular, so keep it.
I don't know whether anyone is using scripts/kconfig/config. Remove it
and see if anyone screams.
scripts/kconfig/streamline_config.pl deals with modules ('m' values) and
can safely be removed. Zephyr's Kconfig files do not use modules.

They will no longer be available once the C Kconfig implementation is
removed.
oldconfig and allno/yesconfig implementations are available for
kconfiglib and could be added later if needed. savedefconfig (minimal
configuration generation) is available from the menuconfig.py
configuration interface.
cmake/usage/kconfig-usage.cmake becomes kinda pointless after this
change, so merge it into cmake/usage/usage.cmake.
Remove the kconfig_target, COMMAND_FOR_*, and COMMAND_RUNS_ON_WIN_*
CMake variables, as there's just the 'menuconfig' target now.

When a bug in the caching mechanism is detected the cache format must
be bumped to ensure that we no longer get a cache hit on old corrupted
keys.
This fixes#7246 when the cache is corrupted.

Messages about compiler checks are very verbose so we disable them by
default. They have always been undesirably verbose, but introducing
CMAKE_REQUIRED_FLAGS into the 'check' string made them unacceptably
so.

Fix a bug where different compiler checks were aliased and therefore
the test results were incorrectly re-used.
The 'check' string is used by CMake internally to cache test results,
but when testing linker flags the check string has been aliased
between the different linker checks. To fix the aliasing issue we add
the CMAKE_REQUIRED_FLAGS variable to the 'check' string. The aliasing
issue disappears because the linker flag-under-test is in
'CMAKE_REQUIRED_FLAGS'.

This patchset provides Xtensa's xcc compiler support for Xtensa

This commit adds a Kconfiglib-based menuconfig implementation, built
with the standard Python 'curses' module. A new 'pymenuconfig' target is
added to run it.
The C tools are kept for now. Removing them separately allows testing of
pymenuconfig alongside the C tools, and keeps changes small and focused.
A feature is planned for later that shows all symbols -- including those
that aren't currently visible -- along with a search and "jump to"
feature. Loading of arbitrary .config files will be supported later as
well (as opposed to always loading .config/KCONFIG_CONFIG). Those
features are all connected implementation-wise.
For Windows, the wheels at
https://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/#curses provide the curses
implementation. They use the standard Python curses module
(_cursesmodule.c), linked against PDCurses.
Running 'python -VV' gives the Python version and bitness, to know which
wheel to install. User documentation will be added once the C tools are
removed and the 'pymenuconfig' target is moved over to 'menuconfig'.
The CMake parts are originally by Sebastian Bøe.

Overview
========
A curses-based menuconfig implementation. The interface should feel
familiar to people used to mconf ('make menuconfig').
Supports the same keys as mconf, and also supports a set of
keybindings inspired by Vi:
J/K : Down/Up
L : Enter menu/Toggle item
H : Leave menu
Ctrl-D/U: Page Down/Page Down
G/End : Jump to end of list
g/Home : Jump to beginning of list
The mconf feature where pressing a key jumps to a menu entry with
that character in it in the current menu isn't supported. A search
feature with a "jump to" function for jumping directly to a
particular symbol regardless of where it is defined will be added
later instead.
Space and Enter are "smart" and try to do what you'd expect for the
given menu entry.
Running
=======
menuconfig.py can be run either as a standalone executable or by
calling the menu.menuconfig() function with an existing Kconfig
instance. The second option is a bit inflexible in that it will
still load and save .config, etc.
When run in standalone mode, the top-level Kconfig file to load can
be passed as a command-line argument. With no argument, it defaults
to "Kconfig".
The KCONFIG_CONFIG environment variable specifies the .config file
to load (if it exists) and save. If KCONFIG_CONFIG is unset,
".config" is used.
$srctree is supported through Kconfiglib.
Other features
==============
- Seamless terminal resizing
- No dependencies on *nix, as the 'curses' module is in the Python
standard library
- Unicode text entry
- Improved information screen compared to mconf:
* Expressions are split up by their top-level &&/|| operands
to improve readability

This is mostly due to Python 2 not having curses.get_wch(),
which is needed for Unicode support.
- Doesn't work out of the box on Windows

This commit introduces TOOLCHAIN_SIGNATURE. A CMake variable that is
defined like this:
Toolchains with the same signature will always support the same set of
flags.
Currently it is implemented by MD5summing the CC binary.
This is useful for instance if the build system needs to determine if
it has seen the toolchain before, e.g. in a caching use-case.

To improve the build system's "clean build" runtime we need to cache
files in a directory outside of the build directory.
Caching files outside of the build directory is is already being done
to a certain degree today. For instance, if a user has installed
ccache it will cache files in $HOME/.ccache/.
This commit locates a directory that is suitable for caching files in
a cross-platform way. For instance on Linux this is believed to be
$HOME, on Windows this is believed to be %LOCALAPPDATA%.
If for whatever reason no environment variables are are found to be
suitable we fall back to using $ZEPHYR_BASE/.cache/. For users that
often use 'git -clean' the caching mechanism will not work as well,
but it will at least be better than no caching at all.

Added a CMake extention for determining if a directory is write-able
by the build system. To determine this, we attempt to 'touch' a file
in the directory and check the return code of this command.

Improve the error feedback when the toolchain is not found.
Currently, for some setups, presumably primarily SDK-less setups,
users can get an error message like this for certain types of
misconfigurations:

This uses the version and hash (git describe) and replaces the timestamp
currently used in the boot banner. This works much better than using
timestamps. It lets us point to the exact commit being used to run a
certain application or test.

The actual behaviour of CONIG_FP_SOFTABI has not been matching the
documenation. The Kconfig documentation states that floating point
instructions should be generated, but this Kconfig option has been
turning off floating point instructions instead.
This commit causes floating point instructions to be generated when
CONFIG_FP_SOFTABI is enabled, as was originally intended and
documented.
This commit can cause regressions if users have been relying on the
actual behaviour instead of the documented behaviour.

This option selects the Floating point ABI in which hardware
floating point instructions are generated but soft-float calling
conventions.
GCC documentation:
Specifying ‘soft’ causes GCC to generate output containing library
calls for floating-point operations. ‘softfp’ allows the generation of

soft-float calling conventions. ‘hard’ allows generation of
floating-point instructions and uses FPU-specific calling conventions.

If the value argument to set_ifndef() may be unset, the entire value
must be double-quoted to avoid a CMake syntax error.
Fix call sites which don't handle this, or which otherwise make

We are using the CMake command 'file(STRINGS' (which defaults to only
decoding ASCII) to read Kconfig configurations. When UTF-8 characters
are detected they are treated as newlines.
This behaviour has caused issues when users have input UTF-8
characters into Kconfig values. E.g. USB device descriptor strings.
This commit adds the flag 'ENCODING "UTF-8"' to the 'file(STRINGS'
command so that UTF-8 characters are correctly passed through the
build system.

Moving the ccache build script earlier in allows us to export ccache
to external projects. Using ccache with external projects, such as
OpenThread, can significantly speed up the build time.

We assumed that ${BOARD} and ${BOARD_FAMILY} are always the same and
thus interchangeable. That isn't always the case so use ${BOARD} proper
for when we mean the exact BOARD name we are building for vs the
BOARD_FAMILY.
We also add .dts files for board variants within a board family, such
that we have a .dts matching each board name.

Per arch the path to the SOC dir that we would find dts.fixup varies
between being ${CONFIG_SOC_FAMILY}/${CONFIG_SOC_SERIES} and just
${CONFIG_SOC}. The ${SOC_PATH} var handles defining this correct so
use it instead when we define DTS_SOC_FIXUP_FILE.

We need access to SOC_PATH in dts.cmake so we need to move the
definitions of SOC_NAME, SOC_SERIES, SOC_FAMILY, and SOC_PATH out of the
toplevel CMakeLists.txt and into cmake/app/boilerplate.cmake. We place
them before we include cmake/dts.cmake so they will be available to use
in it.

Create a net sample to setup a multi-node RPL mesh network using QMEU.
To enable this, it was necessary implement a hw filter on IEEE 802.15.4
UART Pipe driver and create a QEMU pipe management on cmake.
This sample use a tool developed on zephyr net-tools repository called
virtual-hub.

This is one way we can support out of tree board definitions. Basically
all this needs is a board definition in the application source directory
that follows the same structure we have in the main Zephyr tree (also
allowing multiple custom boards). An application tree would look like
this for example:

Move toolchain definitions into toolchain/ and move compilers to
compilers/
Usage of toolchain- for everything was confusing, there are the actual
compiler related definitions and there is the toolchain/SDK related
configs, so keeping them separate helps understand the different and
prevents confusion.

When the Kconfig BOOTLOADER_MCUBOOT is selected, an overlay to place the
image at the slot0 location is required. In order to avoid having to do
this manually for all samples when targetting MCUboot, include the logic
inside the dts.cmake script to prepend a new common.dts file that then
conditionally includes mcuboot.overlay.

Ninja by default will suppress command output and input. This is a
problem for the 'flash', 'debug', etc. targets, which may need to
interact with the user (and which display interactive output like
progress bars).
To fix this, add the USES_TERMINAL option to their target
definitions. This puts them in the console pool on Ninja, allowing the
commands to interact with the console.

$ENV{ZEPHYR_BASE} was recently search-replaced with ${ZEPHYR_BASE},
but some CMake code, like usage.cmake, is run by a seperate CMake
build system that does not have access to the CMake variable
ZEPHYR_BASE.
This patch reverts the usage of ${ZEPHYR_BASE} back to use
$ENV{ZEPHYR_BASE} in usage.cmake.
This has been proven to work on both Windows and Linux.

Run Kconfig on every reconfigure but with different fragments
depending on the situation.
When .config is missing or when a file from merge_config_file has been
modified use the merge_config_file's as input, otherwise use .config
as input.
This should match the behaviour before kconfiglib.py was introduced
and fixes#5673.

'conf' is part of the zephyr SDK or need to be built and installed in
the path. We now using python for Kconfig processing, so this is not a
strict requirement and we should be able to build without it. If the
binary is not found, just go on with our business.

Due to a chicken-and-egg problem, it's not possible to call
board_runner_args() directly from an application CMakeLists.txt and
have it take effect:
- if the board_runner_args() call appears before including the
boilerplate file, then the function is undefined and an error
occurs.
- if the call appears after including the boilerplate file, then
board_finalize_runner_args() has already been called by the
relevant runner.board.cmake file, so it won't take effect.
Similarly to the way set_conf_file() works, allow applications to
declare additional runner args by checking if they have provided a
macro named app_set_runner_args(), which contains calls to
board_runner_args(). Using a macro means that we can invoke it with
the definition of board_runner_args() in scope.

When Kconfiglib was introduced it caused a significant performance
issue. This patch uses pruning to mitigate the performance issue.
The pruning exploits the fact that before the Kconfig database is
parsed we already know what ARCH and BOARD has been selected. So in
theory we could prune away all Kconfig sources that are not related to
the current ARCH or BOARD. In practice, it is only the Kconfig sources
in zephyr/arch/$ARCH and zephyr/board/$ARCH/ that are easy to prune.
Still, that is quite a few Kconfig sources. For qemu_x86 this patch
reduced the number of parsed Kconfig source files from 632 to
272. This pruning resulted in a incremental reconfiguration (time
cmake ..) speedup of 21% (0.56s to 0.46) and a clean build speedup of
4% (Using board qemu_x86 and sample hello_world).
Furthermore, it should be easier to maintain ARCH's and BOARD's
out-of-tree since the user now has a mechanism to redirect where
Kconfig sources are found. But this has not been explored.

Kconfiglib does not support merging fragments without parsing the
entire Kconfig "database". For Zephyr this means we no longer get a
performance gain from splitting up the fragment-merging and the
.config generation.
This patch removes the seperated merge step and it's associated
caching mechanism. Now we do a full Kconfig execution on every
reconfiguration.

We have been using a fork of the Linux kernel's Kconfig system to
configure the Zephyr tree. The issue is that this is a native tool
written in C that is not easy to compile for Windows. This patch
replaces the use of the conf executable with kconfig.py, a script that
uses Kconfiglib to generate the .config and autoconf.h files required to
compile Zephyr.

Instead of accessing the environment variable ZEPHYR_BASE every time we
require accessing the source code root, use an intermediate variable
that has OS path separators correctly set to '/' to avoid issues on
Windows.
Note: This removes the ZEPHYR_SOURCE_DIR CMake variable. External
applications using that will need to change to use the new ZEPHYR_BASE
variable.

Windows users have on multiple occasions cloned Zephyr using a Windows
git client. It seems that the windows git client defaults to
converting line endings from LF to CRLF when cloning repo's. This
breaks at least one of Zephyr's tools (Kconfig).
This patch introduces a sanity check of the environment for MSYS
users.

Depending on a path inside the Zephyr tree to determine if we are a test
does not scale. Also some samples were marked as TEST while they are
not, just to get some options defined for tests.
Idenitfying a test will be addressed in another patch introducing
CONFIG_TEST.

Introduce Zephyr interface libraries to fix#5351.
From the documentation:
A Zephyr interface library is a thin wrapper over a CMake INTERFACE
library. The most important responsibility of this abstraction is to
ensure that when a user KConfig-enables a library then the header
files of this library will be accessible to the 'app' library.
This is done because when a user uses Kconfig to enable a library he
expects to be able to include it's header files and call it's
functions out-of-the box.
A Zephyr interface library should be used when there exists some
build information (include directories, defines, compiler flags,
etc.) that should be applied to a set of Zephyr libraries and 'app'
might be one of these libraries.
Zephyr libraries must explicitly call
zephyr_library_link_libraries(<interface_library>) to use this build
information. 'app' is treated as a special case for usability
reasons; a Kconfig option (CONFIG_APP_LINK_WITH_<interface_library>)
should exist for each interface_library and will determine if 'app'
links with the interface_library.
This API has a constructor like the zephyr_library API has, but it

I don't know why we have been passing "-serial none" to qemu but it
does not seem to be doing anything useful. So I propose we remove it.
According to the qemu documenation it should be disabling all serial
ports;
"-serial dev
Redirect the virtual serial port to host character device dev. The
default device is vc in graphical mode and stdio in non graphical
mode.
This option can be used several times to simulate up to 4 serial
ports.
Use -serial none to disable all serial ports."
But when we use "-serial none", we always combine it with "-serial
pipe", or "-serial unix", to redirect the serial port, so clearly it
is not disabling all serial ports as it attempting to do.
"-serial none" was first introduced to Zephyr in this commit:

As far I can tell, pinging an echo_server works fine without it, so I
suspect that our second -serial flag is overriding it and that it has
no effect.

Using the '\$' technique to accept make variables corrupts Ninja build
systems, so avoid using it when generating Ninja files. Not using it
with Ninja means we need to come up with some other mechanism to
support build-time configuration of the QEMU CLI with Ninja.

The generate_inc_file_for_target() extension is a useful wrapper
around the more low-level generate_inc_file(). It takes care of
ensuring that the generated file correctly depends on it's source.
To do so it needs to name and define a custom_target, the name must be
unique, so it was constructed based on the path to the generated file,
but this caused multiple issues.
The intention was that the path of the file would help identify the
target, in hindsight, identifying the target has proven to not be
important.
This patch fixes#5466 by using a random string to construct the
target name instead of the path to the generated file.

target_ld_options() was only testing whether a flag could be passed to
the compiler driver when it was compiling an object file. Not whether
a flag could be passed to the compiler driver when it was linking an
elf file.
For most flags, these tests would have the same result, but it does
not for flags like -Wl,--print-memory-usage or -Wl,notaflag.
This patch fixes#5488 by re-using the method from #5459.

To indicate the generated binary is executable on the host, add .exe
extension to the generated ELF file.

applications natively on the host instead of qemu.

Right now we are hardcoded to only qemu, with the native port, we make
this more generic and support this in a plugin mode where a running has
its own cmake definitons implementing the various targets.

A new arch (posix) which relies on pthreads to emulate the context
switching
A new soc for it (inf_clock) which emulates a CPU running at an
infinely high clock (so when the CPU is awaken it runs till completion
in 0 time)
A new board, which provides a trivial system tick timer and
irq generation.

To avoid warnings from cmake such as:
'path' is reserved or not valid for certain CMake features, such as
generator expressions, and may result in undefined behavior.
This can be seen in Jenkins for example where @ is used when multiple
jobs are run on the same machine.

The properties definitions were not doing much because they were
defined after they were used. They were actually overriding the true
properties with "".
Moving them earlier ensures that the properties behave as expected, as
documented global mutable variables.

The various runners (flash/debug scripts) use environment variables to
take arguments. This is legacy behavior which is not desirable.
Use command line arguments instead.
Note: this leaves more general environment variables with publicly
documented behavior in place for now, for compatibility, e.g.:
ZEPHYR_FLASH_OVER_DFU, OPENSDA_FW, ESP_IDF_PATH, PYOCD_DAPARG
For example, when using dfu-util to flash arduino_101, instead of
setting DFUUTIL_PID, DFUUTIL_ALT, and DFUUTIL_IMG environment
variables, have the script invocation look like this:
python3 .../zephyr_flash_debug.py dfu-util flash \
[common arguments omitted] \
--pid=8087:0aba --alt=x86_app \
--img=.../build/zephyr/zephyr.bin
Make similar changes for other runners (openocd, etc.) and
targets (debug, debugserver).
To implement this in the scripts:
- have the individual scripts/support/runner/some-runner.py files
register their own command line arguments
- teach them to construct instances from arguments, not the
environment
- have zephyr_flash_debug.py request runners to register command
line argument parsers, and handle arguments
In the build system:
- add a new board_runner_args() extension function that board.cmake
files can use to add to the zephyr_flash_debug.py command line
- adjust cmake/flash/CMakeLists.txt to invoke with arguments
- add new helper include files for each runner (like
boards/common/dfu-util.board.cmake, etc.), which add default
options as needed and then add on overrides from
board_runner_args() calls
- update board.cmake files to use the new includes and extension
This implied some tweaking when using openocd to make the CMake string
escaping and unescaping work properly.

I keep tripping over not being able to use set_ifndef to set a value
to a list, like this:
set_ifndef(VARIABLE value1 value2 value3...)
Allow that to work without changing its existing behavior when called
with one argument.

The Python-based runners have replaced the old shell scripts. Refactor
the build system accordingly:
- FLASH_SCRIPT is now BOARD_FLASH_RUNNER
- DEBUG_SCRIPT is now BOARD_DEBUG_RUNNER
The values, rather than being the names of files, are now the names of
runners in scripts/support/runner. They are still short, descriptive
names like "openocd", "jlink", "em-starterkit", etc.
Adjust the zephyr_flash_debug.py call and runner internals
accordingly. Have each runner class report a name and the commands it
can handle. This lets us move some boilerplate from each do_run()
method into the common run() routine, and enables further improvements
in future patches.
The handles_command() method is temporary, and will be replaced by a
more general mechanism for describing runner capabilities in a
subsequent patch. The initial use case for extending this is to add
device tree awareness to the runners.
To try to avoid user confusion, abort the configuration if an
xxx_SCRIPT is defined.

Support installing toolchains in "Program Files", or more generally,
in paths that contain whitespace. This is a common bug for new users
to discover.

size_report was using the environment variables NM and OBJDUMP to find
it's toolchain dependencies. It is not clear how well this will work
on different platforms; OSX, Windows. So we now pass the paths of
these dependencies from the build system to the script.
PS: This ensures that size_report uses the cross-compiler's GNU bin
tool instead of the host GNU bin tools. This is presumably beneficial
as it has been required for other GNU bin tools like GDB.

We don't want to pollute core-infrastructure with board-specific code,
so we move the qemu discovery to after board.cmake has been executed,
and we introduce the overridable QEMU_binary_suffix CMake variable.

In that case, QEMU is emulating the base (root system) that will be
partitioned to receive Zephyr as one of the cells/guests, not the direct
system Zephyr will run on. We need this one more level of indirection,
otherwise it's impossible to attest Zephyr is running in a virtualized
environment in QEMU.
Fix QEMU binary to point to the x86_64 version, then, once Jailhouse is
targeted at that architecture.
Finally, don't pass QEMU the -kernel flag in this case, since Zephyr has
to loaded manually, from inside QEMU, for Jailhouse's make run target.

Print the usage when an invalid board is given, this somewhat
allievates the catch-22 where you need to run CMake to know what
boards exist, but you need a board to run CMake.

There is a catch-22 in that you need to run CMake to get a build
system that can show you usage, but you need to know the usage to be
able to get a build system.
This assert could be used to improve the usability somewhat. When
invalid usage is detected it can be used to print the usage.

When exporting flags to an external build system we need to deal with
the fact that we sometimes use generator expressions. Specifically, we
use generator expressions that look like this:
$<$<COMPILE_LANGUAGE:CXX>:-fno-exceptions>
This patch replaces the old API with a new one where users can ask for
compile options for specific languages, like this:
zephyr_get_compile_options_for_lang_as_string(CXX x)
The existing API would have either crashed or silently omitted flags
when a COMPILE_LANG generator expression was present.

It is supported to add give extra flags to the linker from the
commandline like this:
cmake -DEXTRA_LDFLAGS=-Lmy_dir path
But unfortunately this was broken during the CMake
migration. Interestingly, the reason that it was broken is that KBuild
was also partially broken. KBuild would pass on EXTRA_LDFLAGS when
object files were linked together into built-in.o files, but it would
not use EXTRA_LDFLAGS for the final link into an elf file.
This patch fixes EXTRA_LDFLAGS.

It does so by splitting up gen_syscalls.py into two scripts with a
json metadata file to communicate syscall metadata between them. The
parsing script parses header files from include/ and writes syscall
metadata to a file if the contents changed. The generation script
reads from the json file and generates syscall code.
The build system DAG now looks like this:
always_rebuild -> json -> syscalls -> offset.o
The script for generating json will do so only if the content changes,
this ensures that the entire DAG does not always do a full rebuild.

time to build time. This allows us to express to the build system that
syscall_macros.h depends on the script that generates it.

Both options were originally parameters to *make*, not cmake, so people
can augment QEMU ibocation from run to run, not from complete rebuild
to complete rebuild. Make them such again.
However, just in case, ability to set "default" value for those options
on CMake level is preserved.

The target_cc_option[_fallback]() CMake extentions are now C++
aware. This means that they will now test options with both C and C++
compiler and include flags appropriately.
This fixes a warning that was issued when -Wno-pointer-sign was used
with .cpp files.
cc1plus: warning: command line option ‘-Wno-pointer-sign’ is valid for
C/ObjC but not for C++
NB: This patch is designed to only affect CONFIG_CPLUSPLUS builds in
case there are any adverse affects with using generator expressions.

QEMU_INSTANCE should be a parameter to *make*, not cmake, so people
can run few instances of the same sample without building each of
them separately in separate dirs.

The desired behaviour is that when a flag that is given through the
zephyr_* API conflicts with the zephyr_library_* API then precedence
will be given to the zephyr_library_* API. In other words, local
configuration overrides global configuration.
We choose to rely upon the compiler for sane behaviour when flags are
in conflict. Compilers generally give precedence to flags given late
on the command line. So to ensure that zephyr_library_* flags are
placed late on the command line we create a dummy interface library
and link with it to obtain the flags.
Other options were considered, source file properties would also have
higher priority. But that would have required some kind of
post-processing stage that applies all the source file properties.
Linking with a dummy interface library will place flags later on the
command line than the the flags from zephyr_interface because
zephyr_interface will be the first interface library that flags are
taken from.

The PREBUILT_HOST_TOOLS variable was used during the CMake migration
but is no longer documented or needed. As the docs demonstrate, adding
tools to path is an easy way to find prebuilt host tools.

We append a path to the FLASH_SCRIPT/DEBUG_SCRIPT that was bogus and not
really needed by zephyr_flash_debug.py. So lets remove it since its
just confusing.

This change changes the semantics of the environment variable
ZEPHYR_SDK_INSTALL_DIR to allow the use of 3rd party toolchains
alongside the Zephyr SDK's host tools.
Specifically, setting ZEPHYR_SDK_INSTALL_DIR now indicates that the
Zephyr SDK host tools are to be used. But not necessarily that the
Zephyr SDK's toolchain is to be used.
The documentation is also changed to explain this behaviour.

Some boards define multiple configuration which all are maintained under
the same board directory. The flasher was looking for an openocd.cfg
based on the board name, which can't be found for such boards.
Use the variable BOARD_DIR provided by cmake instead of trying to
assemble the board directory location on our own.

calling zephyr_sources() on a directory will silently omit the
directory. This is a clear user error and should be immediately
flagged as such.

The old way of constructing FLASH_SCRIPT_ENV_VARS was corrupting the
values that were passed to the flasher. This new method is the
standard way of creating a dictionary/hashmap in CMake and does not
suffer from the same problem.

Some toolchains, such as the one provided by Espressif for the ESP32,
or ISSM provided by Intel, will contain only the compiler, linker, and
supporting tools. Other binaries needed by the build system that are
provided by the Zephyr SDK need to be found somewhere else.

Introducing CMake is an important step in a larger effort to make
Zephyr easy to use for application developers working on different
platforms with different development environment needs.
Simplified, this change retains Kconfig as-is, and replaces all
Makefiles with CMakeLists.txt. The DSL-like Make language that KBuild
offers is replaced by a set of CMake extentions. These extentions have
either provided simple one-to-one translations of KBuild features or
introduced new concepts that replace KBuild concepts.
This is a breaking change for existing test infrastructure and build
scripts that are maintained out-of-tree. But for FW itself, no porting
should be necessary.
For users that just want to continue their work with minimal
disruption the following should suffice:
Install CMake 3.8.2+
Port any out-of-tree Makefiles to CMake.
Learn the absolute minimum about the new command line interface:
$ cd samples/hello_world
$ mkdir build && cd build
$ cmake -DBOARD=nrf52_pca10040 ..
$ cd build
$ make
